Beat That Heat

Health providers offer tips on staying cool, outside and in.

To watch young Callum Pollock run around the Wiltshire Park playground late Wednesday afternoon, you wouldn't know the thermometer reading was nearing 90. "He's been inside most of the day," said his mother, Morna, as she sat on the edge of a sandbox, braving the temperatures. Fortunately, Callum could cool off with an an occasional jaunt through the park's concrete seal that has been spraying water on Upper St. Clair children for decades. But other folks don't have that luxury. With Thursday expected to be a repeat, West Penn Allegheny Health System and St. Clair Hospital offer tips for anyone who expects to be exposed to the heat, indoors or out:

St. Clair Hospital Wins National Award

The local hospital was named by Reuters as one of the Top 100 institutions in the country.

St. Clair Hospital officials are celebrating an independent study that named it one of the Top-100 hospitals in the country. The Thomson Reuters study named St. Clair as one of the top Large Community Hospitals after weighing its performance in mortality, patient satisfaction, cost-efficiency and other factors. The only other hospital in this area to be named to the list was Allegheny General Hospital, which scored high marks as a Major Teaching Institution. The study has been conducted since 1993 and evaluates nearly 3,000 hospitals across the country. “From a national perspective, it’s nice to be included in the company of such prestigious hospitals,” said Michael Flanagan, who is the hospital’s senior vice president and chief operating …

St. Clair Hospital Officials, Developers Dig for New Outpatient Facility

The groundbreaking—held Thursday—commenced construction, which is slated to be completed in the spring of 2013.

St. Clair Hospital officials and site developers broke ground Thursday for Peters Township's newest medical center, St. Clair Hospital Outpatient Center.  The two-story, 40,000-square-foot building is located at 3928 Washington Road in McMurray—in the former space of Al Lorenzi Building Products. The first floor will include full-service diagnostic capabilities and the second floor will house physicians’ offices—an on-site cafe will also be constructed. Officials said the outside will have a campus feel with landscaping and planted islands. The building will be "fundamentally green" and include a Safe Zone Walkway to the parking lot, which includes 180 parking spaces.  A traffic light already exists at the entrance of the location, however…

News Nearby: St. Clair Hospital to Break Ground in Peters

Construction of the 40,000-square-foot outpatient facility will begin following Thursday's groundbreaking.

Peters Township has become the medical mecca of the South Hills in recent years and today St. Clair Hospital is breaking ground on its outpatient facility along Route 19.  With construction originally scheduled to start last summer, the $20 million, 40,000-square-foot facility is now ready to go up. The building, located at 3928 Washington Road, is set to face Route 19 with a green buffer of landscaping between the road and the facility—complete with 180 spaces of parking behind, creating "a more aesthetically-pleasing" look, we reported last May.  The two-story building will be built near Donaldson's Crossroads, at the site of the former Al Lorenzi Building Products.  According to last year's reports, the Mt. Lebanon hospital has seen a …

News Nearby: Young Boy Struck By Car

The 5-year-old was crossing Washington Avenue with his mother when he was hit by a car pulling out of Burgh's.

A 5-year-old boy was struck by a car Tuesday afternoon with enough force to knock him out of his shoes while trying to cross Washington Avenue in Bridgeville with his mother. The boy was not seriously injured, although he was taken to St. Clair Hospital for precautionary reasons, Bridgeville police Chief Chad King said. “As far as I know, he’s doing well,” King said. “He was up and moving around and doing pretty good once everyone checked him out. "I guess little kids are made of rubber.” King said the boy was walking with his mother, who was also holding a 5-month-old child, at about 1 p.m. when they tried to cross Washington Avenue between Bridgeville Appliance and Burgh’s. Traffic stopped in both directions, but a 20-year-old Cecil …

St. Clair Expanding its Cancer Center

The project will increase the size of the Mt. Lebanon hospital's cancer center by nearly 25 percent.

St. Clair Hospital broke ground this week on a expansion project that will increase the size of its cancer center by nearly 25 percent. The hospital in Mt. Lebanon is building a new area for a “linear accelerator” that will be housed in a vault with 84-inch thick walls. The building will expand the existing 8,000-square-foot cancer center by an additional 1,885-square-feet. A backhoe began digging Tuesday next to the current UPMC/St. Clair Hospital Cancer Center and the project is expected to be completed by the end of the summer. “When the renovation and the addition of the new linear accelerator are completed, the center will offer even more advance services and increased patient access,” said Dr. Robert Werner, who is a radiation …
