Do you have evidence that "teaching solely for the test" is the reason for the high scores? High test scores do not necessarily mean USC is teaching to the test. It is merely one way to measure school performance. In addition to teaching to the test, the reason for high test scores could be excellent curriculum, dedicated teachers, involved parents, high socioeconomic environment and many others…   more ›

7th in the state, really would say 6th, the #1 school is "J R MASTERMAN LABORATORY AND DEMONSTRATION SCHOOL" which isn't REALLY a public school (they select top academic students from the Philadelphia region to attend). Of the other 5 schools above USC, almost every one is ranked as one of the top schools in the country by US News or other reports. So there is a very marginal room for improvement…   more ›

To answer the question, one can only supply personal experience and perhaps a bit of informed insight. I am very grateful that my four children were lucky enough to be able to reap the benefits offered by one of the top public school districts in the nation. If I had to pick one component in our schools which truly generates success it would have to be the student/teacher relationship. No student…   more ›

You're right. I don't think of things that way. As a parent, I always find my child achieving is enough of a pat on the back for me. I don't look for more. But certainly very few children can achieve without parental support. And, as I think about it more, we should certainly thank the taxpayers. As we know, education is USC's #1 industry and what protects our home values (for many people their …   more ›
