USC tops the Pittsburgh Business Times list for the eighth year in a row.
Upper St. Clair School District is the No. 1 school in the state and in southwestern Pennsylvania, according to the Pittsburgh Business Times. It's the eighth straight year in a row the district has received the No. 1 ranking. The newspaper develops the list based on three years of PSSA test scores in math, reading and science. The Pennsylvania Department of Education released a list of high schools' average SAT scores for 2012 and Upper St. Clair High School tops the list. Out of 343 Upper St. Clair High School students tested, the average verbal score was 568, the average math score was 583 and the average writing score was 576. Coming in right behind Upper St. Clair is North Allegheny High School. Out of the 572 students tested there, the average verbal score was 566, the average math score was 582 and the average writing score was 557. And coming in third is Mt. Lebanon High School. Superintendent Patrick O'Toole reacts to the Pittsburgh Business Times school rankings.
Upper St. Clair School District Superintendent Patrick O'Toole was pleased to learn that the district was ranked number one in western Pennsylvania and in the entire commonwealth for the seventh consecutive year by the Pittsburgh Business Times. "It's something our community should be proud of," he said. "It started decades ago, the community is built around the school district. We as leaders have a legacy and responsibility to maintain that." "It's the parents, the administration, our wonderful staff and our kids who execute," said Amy Billerbeck, school board member. The Pittsburgh Business Times released its annual rankings.
Upper St. Clair School District is ranked number one for a seventh year in a row. The Pittsburgh Business Times released the school district rankings for the Pittsburgh area and for the entire state of Pennsylvania on Friday. USC ranked number one out of 105 school districts in the seven-county region around Pittsburgh and as the best-performing statewide. The newspaper analyzed all the school districts' performance based on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment Exam results. Superintendent Patrick O'Toole said the praise comes among tough economic times for the district. This school year the district experienced some teacher cuts and added athletic registration fees. Louis Anthony Jewelers is one of the top places to work, according to the Pittsburgh Business Times. The local newspaper used confidential employee surveys to determine the best workplaces in the Pittsburgh region. The jewelry store, located in Upper St. Clair, ranked fifth on the list of the 78 top places to work. Employees said they weren't surprised their employer received the honor. "I think it's absolutely true," said Lynelle Young, a Louis Anothony Jewelers employee and Upper St. Clair resident. Young was once a loyal Louis Anthony Jewelers client, often visiting the store to check out new items and to chat. The Challenge measures how effectively a school prepares students for college.
In the world of rankings, Upper St. Clair High School got a good one this week from the Washington Post's High School Challenge. Upper St. Clair ranked third out of 31 schools that made the list from Pennsylvania. Do you have evidence that "teaching solely for the test" is the reason for the high scores? High test scores do not necessarily mean USC is teaching to the test. It is merely one way to measure school performance.
