Upper St. Clair Girl Featured During Governor's Budget Address

Gov. Tom Corbett invited the Kondrich family.

Upper St. Clair's Chloe Kondrich was featured during Gov. Tom Corbett's budget address on Tuesday. "She is a bright 9 year old who takes theater classes, plays baseball and is in fourth grade at Eisenhower Elementary School. "One other thing about Chloe: She was born with Down syndrome," Corbett said. Corbett asked Chloe and her family to attend his address so he could make his promise to them in person. "I am determined that by the time Chloe, and the thousands of other young people with disabilities, have reached adulthood, they will be able to step into a full and active life as citizens of this state. Eisenhower Elementary Is 'Full,' Board Examines Enrollment

Enrollment at Streams Elementary has stayed the same since converting first and second grades into all IB.

The Upper St. Clair School Board is examining the enrollment at the district's three elementary schools. Superintendent Patrick O'Toole said Eisenhower Elementary "can still take some more students, but not many more. "They're full," he said. The board is working to make sure there are no overcrowding issues when new homes and neighborhoods are constructed in Upper St. Clair, including the recently approved Bedner Estates subdivision that will have more than 130 single family houses. Currently, there are 538 students at Eisenhower, 445 at Baker and 495 at Streams. In the last six years, the number of students at Eisenhower increased by 42. At Baker the increase was 12 students and there was a 47-student increase at Streams. The first and …

In my day, those factors were primarily family wealth/community prominence, perceived physical attractiveness, sports and clubs -- not necessarily in that order. Some …   more ›

School Board Explores Increasing Class Sizes

The latest news from the Upper St. Clair School Board.

The Upper St. Clair School District is researching what—if any—classrooms it can increase in size to save money on staffing. Administrators presented information to the school board Monday night. "We're not talking about increasing class size because we want to, but because we might need to," said Rebecca Stern, school board president. A class size policy adopted in 1967 and last revised in 1986 recommends maximum class sizes for kindergarten and first grade be 25 students, 27 in second grade, 30 in grades three through 12, with an exception to keep class size at 25 for advanced and AP classes. However, assistant Superintendent Sharon Suritsky said, "We're asking teachers to do more than when the policy was last revised in '86." In 2006, …
