Take on summer with YMCA's Healthy Kids Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at South Hills Village. The free community event encourages attendees to move, learn and live healthier. Families can come and have a blast in a big bouncy house, run through a preschool obstacle course, get cool giveaways and South Hills YMCA program and class offering information, watch a Kang's Karate demonstration and take part in fun activities provided by the Bethel Park Library and other local organizations. The parks and recreation committee examined facilities similar to the Community and Recreation Center at Boyce Mayview Park.
The parks and recreation committee examined the membership rates of health centers similar to the Community and Recreation Center of Boyce Mayview Park on Monday night. Director of Recreation and Leisure Services Paul Besterman said St. Clair Fitness was left off of the table provided during the meeting because the facility does not have a pool. The only local facility on the list below that has an outdoor pool is the Baierl Family YMCA and its outdoor pool is smaller than the outdoor pool at C&RC. The committee recommends no rate increase for the C&RC members this year. Commissioners are expected to vote on the recommendation March 4. The table below was generated by Upper St. Clair employees. What to do with your dried up Christmas tree.
It's a brand new year and time to take down your Christmas decorations. Bring your dried up Christmas trees to the YMCA upper parking lot along McLaughlin Run Road. Be sure to remove all lights and decorations. Upper St. Clair Public Works crews will be grounding the trees up for mulch for residents' use.

Upper St. Clair resident Mike Lloyd will take on the third and final leg of his “Visionquest” this weekend. If you have been following Lloyd, you know that the local attorney has embarked on a three-part challenge this summer to raise money for the South Hills YMCA Camp AIM. Lloyd is a volunteer at the YMCA and hopes to raise more than $2,000. Last month, Lloyd and his friend, Mark Coulson, biked 350 miles from Washington D.C. to Pittsburgh during the extreme heat wave. In June, Lloyd hiked the 34-miles-in-one-day hike when he completed the Rachel Carson Trail Challenge. This weekend, Lloyd and his daughter, Colleen, are going to take part in the half marathon at Pikes Peak in Colorado. The Pikes Peak Marathon is known for its steep and …

YMCA's Camp Kon-O-Kwee Spencer's fourth annual Kon-O-Palooza Music Festival and Open House was a big splash on Saturday. From the North Star Kids' stellar performance to the camp's the Splash Pad—where kids, moms and dads got a chance to cool down—it was a successful day! Camp Kon-O- Kwee hosts adaptive camping for children and adults with physical and mental disabilities, adventure programs for inner city youth at risk, YMCA parent/child campouts, senior citizen camping and school districts participating in environmental education programs.

While most folks will be staying inside this weekend to escape the heat, Upper St. Clair resident Mike Lloyd will be outside biking 350 miles. Lloyd, 49, an attorney, will travel with his law partner, Mike Coulson, and his brother-in-law, Jerry Tucker. The three are completing the bike trip from Washington, D.C. to Pittsburgh as the second leg of Lloyd’s Visionquest. They kicked off their three-day journey this morning in D.C. at about 6 a.m. The trip will follow the C & O Canal and the Allegheny Passage. With temperatures expected to peak over 100 degrees in some areas, obviously, heat will be a factor.
