Superintendent Talks Security Changes on Anniversary of Newtown Massacre

'Should we have armed security in any or all of the buildings?' asked Upper St. Clair School Director Harry Kunselman.

Upper St. Clair Superintendent Patrick O'Toole discussed security measures and changes in the school district on the one-month anniversary of the Newtown massacre. "There are some really difficult decisions on what school environment we will have. Obviously, we want a safe environment," O'Toole told school directors on Monday night. Currently the school district has two school police officers that "basically have the authority of municipal officers," according to O'Toole. There are also two additional part-time security officers. They have been "working more full-time recently." The only problem that I have with the current school security in the district is at Fort Couch Middle School. The building was not designed correctly to protect the students. I brought this up at meetings before the building was reconstructed, but no one listened. The cafeteria where a large number of students gather everyday is the first area anyone trying to do harm would encounter. It is …   more ›

USC School Directors Adopt Resolution Opposing Vouchers

The school board is urging community members to voice their opinion regarding voucher legislation to their Pennsylvania legislators.

The Upper St. Clair School Board is making their opinion public and clear—they are opposed to the tuition voucher program being considered by the state legislature. The board passed the resolution on Monday night in a 7-1 vote. Outgoing School Director Louis Piconi voted no. School Director Bruce Kerman was absent. Tuition vouchers would help poor Pennsylvania residents take their children out of failing schools and send them to private ones. The private school tuition would be funded with money that would otherwise to go Pennsylvania public schools, such as Upper St. Clair School District. The voucher program is part of Gov. The USC School Board's position is myopic. The impact of this legislation will be in failing districts where kids have 1 "choice" and it's a bad one. They deserve the same opportunity as our USC kids, and they won't get it without legislation such as this.   more ›
