What residents should know about the local ambulance service.
Tri-Community South recently celebrated EMS Week—receiving recognition from the three communities they serve: Upper St. Clair, Bethel Park and South Park. Hospitals around Pittsburgh treated paramedics to cookouts, T-shirts and other goodies after they would drop patients off to the emergency rooms. The paramedics also took part in their 15th annual golf outing. Director Nora Helfrich said there are many misconceptions in the public about Tri-Community South EMS, which was founded in 1977. "A lot of people think EMS is free, but it is not," she said. Tri-Community South EMS receives no municipal tax dollars. Emergency Medical Services Week in Upper St. Clair begins Sunday. The Upper St. Clair Board of Commissioners issued an official proclamation on May 7 to designate the week of May 20-26 with the theme "EMS: More Than a Job, a Calling." The community is encouraged to recognize the value and accomplishments of emergency medical service providers and in particular, Tri-Community South Director Nora Halfrich and her highly skilled team, who are ready to provide lifesaving care to those in need 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Representatives from Upper St. Clair, Peters Township and North Strabane met Wednesday with Pittsburgh Region Clean Cities (PRCC) to kick off a study to determine the feasibility of converting municipal vehicle fleets to alternative fuels. In addition to the three municipalities, the study also includes Tri-Community South EMS. The goal of the study is to determine the feasibility of converting the existing municipal vehicle fleets to alternative fuels, including clean burning natural gas. The municipal vehicle fleets are diverse and include vehicles such as public works trucks, police cars, fire trucks, ambulances and other municipal vehicles. What caught my eye is that a household can get total emergency ambulance coverage for only $60 a year! That doesn't sound like too much of an investment although we'd like to think it wouldn't be necessary. I'm going to be checking to see if this is an option in the area our aging parents live.   more ›
