Upper St. Clair police investigated two separate theft cases from local homes.
A babysitter accused of stealing jewelry and checks from an Upper St. Clair home has agreed to a plea deal. Kaylin Lyon, 18, agreed to a summary disorderly conduct charge last Monday in district Judge Robert Wyda's courtroom. According to a criminal complaint filed by the Upper St. Clair police, an Upper St. Clair family accused Lyon of stealing $4,000 in jewelry and taking and cashing two of their checks. They noticed the items missing after she babysat their 2 year old. Police stated she sold the jewelry for $315 at Yuriy's Jewelry at Robinson Mall. District Judge Robert Wyda waived for court on Friday all 24 combined charges against Becks Run firefighters Leonard "Len" Novak and Stephen Bonetti, pushing their case onto a formal arraignment at the Allegheny County Courthouse on Jan. 8. Wyda, the magistrate for Upper St. Clair Township and Bethel Park, oversaw Novak and Bonetti's preliminary hearing because District Judge John N. Bova of Baldwin Borough has recused himself from their case. A judge may recuse him or herself from a case should he or she feel a conflict of interest with any of the participating parties, or have some other legitimate reason. A Monongahela woman hired to clean homes in Upper St. Clair is charged with stealing more than $15,000 in jewelry and cash from three of the houses. Three counts of unlawful taking against Melissa Lynn Wellington, 40, were waived to court Monday. According to a criminal complaint, Upper St. Clair police were called to one of the homes after the homeowners confronted Wellington on Oct. 30. The Providence Point security guard who allegedly stole $150,000 worth of items from residents last year waived his right to a preliminary hearing and will head to trial on all charges. Steven Kowalski, 49, of Baldwin, was accused of a burglarizing numerous apartments in the Scott Township retirement home and taking jewelry, fine silverware and plate settings. Scott Township police arrested him on May 31 and charged him with 16 counts of burglary, nine counts of theft and one count of receiving stolen property. He waived all of the charges to trial before his preliminary hearing with District Judge Gary Zyra on Sept. 27 The thefts began in late October 2011 and ramped up in early December when residents reported seven thefts in 10 days. …

A quick-change scam artist hit the Collier Township Giant Eagle last week and stole $150 from the clerk.
A quick-change scam artist hit the Giant Eagle in Chartiers Valley Shopping Center last week. Collier police said a black man walked into the grocery store at around 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 12 and went to the customer service desk to make a transaction. The man was able to scam the clerk out of $150, police said. A quick-change thief also hit the Dunkin’ Donuts in Dormont on Sept. 7. Police did not say if the two crimes are related. A Pittsburgh woman was charged with heroin possession after Upper St. Clair police were called to a shoplifting incident at Sears in South Hills Village. Amanda R. Binger, 25, was released on bail with the condition of receiving a drug and alcohol evaluation by Aug. 23, according to court records in the office of District Judge Robert Wyda. On Monday, her preliminary hearing before Wyda was rescheduled for Oct. 20, following crime lab analysis. On Aug. 11, Binger was observed by a Sears security office concealing items of clothing, and when she was approached, she fled the store. A Pittsburgh man faces incarceration if he fails to pay the full amount of his restitution. District Judge Robert Wyda on Monday told Phillip Berta, 27, of Fieldcrest Drivbe that he most likely will go to jail if he fails to reimburse a theft victim the remaining $700 he owes her. The deadline is Berta’s next hearing before Wyda, scheduled for Sept. 10. According to court records, Berta has paid $500 of the $1,200 Wyda ordered him to pay. On Dec. 8, an Upper St. Clair resident told police some items were missing from her home, and that “several workmen had been present” at the beginning of the month, according to the police criminal complaint. A Monessen man was jailed after failing to pay restitution to an Upper St. Clair couple.
A Monessen man had his bond revoked Monday by District Judge Robert Wyda, who cited failure to pay restitution. Jason Oliver, 25, was charged in November with theft of jewelry and a cellphone from an Upper St. Clair home. In March, he agreed to compensate the victim, but has not paid anything since, Wyda said. According to township police, Oliver and a woman were staying at the home of a couple, watching their children while they were on vacation. A few days after they returned, the wife told police the phone was missing. Oliver then called police to admit he took the phone and also jewelry, which the couple ascertained to be a ring, watch and bracelets valued at $2,700, according to the police report, which also states that Oliver sold …

A Pittsburgh woman who is accused of using a child as a theft accomplice has had hear preliminary hearing before District Judge Robert Wyda delayed. Ashley Burke, 26, was arrested by Upper St. Clair police on July 1 after being caught with items for which she did not pay after leaving Sears at South Hills Village, according to the police report. The report states that she was observed putting a bottle of cologne in her purse and taking a hair clip from a package and putting it in the 6-year-old girl’s hair. She then returned the package, with two remaining clips, to its proper place.
