The Outdoor Classroom will be one of 150 in the world.

The Outdoor Classroom, located in Upper St. Clair and servicing the southwestern Pennsylvania region, has become the United States’ 72nd Project WET host institution. There are only 150 other Project WET host institutions in 60 countries. As a host institution, The Outdoor Classroom will train formal and non-formal educators to teach children and youth about water resources in engaging ways that promote responsible water stewardship. "We’re excited," said Laurina Isabella Lyle, executive director of Project WET USA. "With its amazing location in the heart of Boyce Mayview Park and established history of helping people of all ages connect with the environment through hands-on learning, The Outdoor Classroom is the perfect organization to …

The Outdoor Classroom Provides Plenty of Experiential Learning

Textbooks are no substitute for the real thing, and the Upper St. Clair-based organization is helping young and old alike explore their world firsthand.

Let’s test your knowledge. What is the difference between a beetle and a true bug? (Volkswagen-related answers don’t count.) A head-scratcher, huh? Well, some folks who are a whole lot younger than you know the answer, thanks to the Outdoor Classroom in Upper St. Clair. More specifically, thanks to Amy Bianco, an Outdoor Classroom staff member who conducted a Talk ’n’ Walk program Sunday on the subject of insects. She provided plenty of information during the first half before taking participants on a hike to find examples from the animal kingdom’s most species-rich class of creatures. If you’re not familiar with the Outdoor Classroom, it’s near the Community and Recreation Center at Boyce Mayview Park. In fact, the classroom predates the …

Mayview Barn to be Demolished

Upper St. Clair commissioners also vote to forgive 30 percent of The Outdoor Classroom composting toilets loan.

Last minute pleas by two residents Monday night were not enough to convince the Upper St. Clair commissioners to spare the Mayview Barn, as the motion to demolish the barn passed 5-1, with Commissioner Preston Shimer opposing it and Commissioner Robert Orchowski absent. Kristen Perryman said she feels demolishing the barn is in stark contrast to what children are learning in school about recycling and reusing what we have. “This is something that has survived the times—100 years. Once you take history away, it is gone forever. I think that maybe we should allow our next generation to make that decision,” Perryman said. “People want stories, and you can’t build new stories. That barn has a lot of stories.” The barn was recently evaluated …

That barn is used for COUNTLESS public works materials. Someone needs to ask where they will now store the thousands of trash cans, bleachers, hay bails, etc. The barn is functionable AND in good condition. Consider this a travesty that this building will be taken down.   more ›

Earth Extravaganza Teaches USC to Celebrate Earth Day Year-Round

Kids and adults learn about bettering their environment in a fun and informative manner.

We've all heard the line, "Don't mess with mother nature." Apparently if you are good to mother nature, she will provide you a beautiful day in order to help make our earth a better place to live. Saturday's scattered thunderstorms kept their distance from Upper St. Clair so organizers could plan a spectacular second annual Earth Extravaganza. "There are plenty of fun things to do outside," program manager Jessie Kester said. The Outdoor Classroom, next to the Community and Recreation Center, played host to a plethora of fun activities geared towards showing families how to have fun in the outdoors while protecting the earth. The day began with various short hikes. The log search actually showed you how to move logs in the forest to see …

Outstanding Toilet Loan Putting a Financial Drain On The Outdoor Classroom

Executive directors of The Outdoor Classroom are asking the township commissioners to forgive their $47,000 loan balance for the purchase of the composting toilets seven years ago.

The executive chairman of The Outdoor Classroom board, Richard Jacobs, asked the Upper St. Clair commissioners to forgive an outstanding $47,000 loan balance the organization owes back to the township. The Outdoor Classroom, previously known as the Regional Environmental Educational Center, purchased two composting toilets in 2005 for $100,000. The toilet system breaks down waste material without a cesspool, septic tank or any impact on a sewer system. Jacobs said The Outdoor Classroom has paid the township between $10,000 and $11,000 each year since the purchase. He said he would rather see that money be used to improve The Outdoor Classroom facility. Following Jacobs' presentation during the board of commissioners informational meeting …

I can't believe that we are actually composting poop. Whose bright idea was this? Why should the taxpayer pay for something we didn't want? Ask the school districts that use this outdoor classroom to chip in and pay. Leave us taxpayers out of it.   more ›
