USC Resident Celebrates Her 105th Birthday

Dorothy Fitzgerald shares her secrets to longevity.

On Friday, Dorothy Elizabeth Fitzgerald marked an impressive milestone in her life, turning 105 years old. Sunrise of Upper St. Clair held a special birthday party to celebrate the event. Many of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren attended the celebration. Brad Harrison, district director of the Mt. Lebanon office of Congressman Tim Murphy, presented Dorothy with a congressional recognition award for the occasion. Dorothy was born July 8, 1906 at Allegheny General Hospital, and grew up in Bellevue, PA. She moved to Upper St. Clair in 1990, after her husband, Walter, passed away. They were married for 53 years. Dorothy lived on her own until she was 104 (and a half), walking nearly two miles to and from St. Thomas More …

Seniors Donate Quilts to Retirement Home

PALS (People Able to Lend Support) donated a plethora of finely crafted quilts to residents at Broadmore Assisted Living.

Randy Detweiler, program coordinator for People Able to Lend Support, a volunteer organization through Highmark, got a group of quilters from St. Thomas More’s Quilt Club to donate their creations to the residents of Broadmore Assisted Living at Lakemont Farms in South Fayette. PALS is a volunteer service credit program available through Highmark Senior Markets. The goal of PALS, which began in 1997, is to help seniors support one another, develop social relationships and maintain their independence for as long as possible. His toughest critic used to be Sister Cecilia at St. Thomas More over ten years ago. “Randy came to us with the idea of a book club and a quilting club ten years ago. MoreFest Promises Fun For All Ages

St. Thomas More Church, located on the border of Bethel Park and Upper St. Clair, holds its fifth annual festival.

St. Thomas More Church may be new to the business of holding festivals, but in just a few short years they have been able to boast one of the largest in the area.  This weekend is only the fifth annual MoreFest and, with the help of other churches "showing them the ropes," the festival brings in more than $80,000 during the four-day event. "Chairmen of other festivals were nice enough to show us how it's done," said co-chairperson Mary Swindal as she made her rounds helping sell raffle tickets for the event. Swindal said being in the infancy stage of organizing festivals has been kind of a blessing for their church. "It's easier to change things up and be open to newer things," Swindal said knowing the fresh ideas help draw big crowds to …
