The Upper St. Clair School District is researching what—if any—classrooms it can increase in size to save money on staffing. Administrators presented information to the school board Monday night. "We're not talking about increasing class size because we want to, but because we might need to," said Rebecca Stern, school board president. A class size policy adopted in 1967 and last revised in 1986 recommends maximum class sizes for kindergarten and first grade be 25 students, 27 in second grade, 30 in grades three through 12, with an exception to keep class size at 25 for advanced and AP classes. USC Cares for Kids organizes the first ever Spring Fling for Upper St. Clair middle school students.
More than 200 middle school students took over the Community and Recreation Center on Saturday night for the first annual Spring Fling. "It's a safe, healthy event for the kids," said Stacie Sebastian, one of the organizers of the program. The kids, grades five through eight, had the entire building to roam. There were basketball games, bingo, art projects and more. However, most kids spent the night on the makeshift dance floor in the lobby. The tweens came running from every direction when the D.J. played "Teach Me How to Dougie," by the Cali Swag District and "Beat Dat Beat," by D.J. Pauly D. All Upper St. Clair middle school students are invited to a special event at the Community and Recreation Center.
The Fall Youth Blast in 2010 went so well, USC Cares for Kids is doing it again! Registration is now open for the Spring Fling. All Upper St. Clair students, grades five through eight, from public or private schools, are invited to the April 2 event at the Community and Recreation Center at Boyce Mayview Park. The fun kicks off at 6:30 p.m. and ends at 8:30 p.m. There will be basketball, volleyball, bingo, art, food, a live DJ and the "Final Four" games will be broadcasted on the lobby televisions. The fee is $3. You can find a registration form here. A number of volunteers helped the Fall Youth Blast's success, and the same will be needed for the Spring Fling.
