What to do with your dried up Christmas tree.
It's a brand new year and time to take down your Christmas decorations. Bring your dried up Christmas trees to the YMCA upper parking lot along McLaughlin Run Road. Be sure to remove all lights and decorations. Upper St. Clair Public Works crews will be grounding the trees up for mulch for residents' use.

Just what is Small Business Saturday and why should you support it in Upper St. Clair?
Big name national retailers take the spotlight on Black Friday as their deep price cuts pull in shoppers in droves. What about those mom-and-pop businesses all over the South Hills and beyond that are the backbone of America’s economy? Just when do they get their day? That’s basically the question that was asked back in 2010 when the concept of Small Business Saturday was born. Small Business Saturday is “a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities,” the U.S. Small Business Administration explains on its website. Wine & Spirits stores are closed Tuesday after Superstorm Sandy. They will not reopen at noon, as previously reported by an employee at the South Hills location. The store normally opens at 9:30 a.m. on weekdays. The state stores closed early Monday at 3 p.m. ahead of the hurricane.

St. Clair Hospital has opened a new “state-of-the-art” Breast Care Center in Bethel Park that is designed to ease the stress of examinations and surgical procedures. The new facility on the third floor of St. Clair’s Outpatient Center across from South Hills Village opened Monday and is serving the South Hills community. Relaxing photos of flowers and the beach hang on walls with soothing colors. “It’s a whole change in atmosphere,” St. Clair spokesman Bob Crytzer said. “That’s a big part of the attitude.” All services that include mammograms, ultrasounds, biopsies, consultation and surgery can be performed at the outpatient center. Patients who come for testing or treatment won’t have to wait to schedule new procedures or consultations. …

Have you ever wondered why the logo for Dormont’s Dream Catchers Films is its namesake—a dream catcher? The symbol is a link to American Indian heritage, and the history of that heritage in southwestern Pennsylvania. That history is something Gil Cutruzzula hopes to bring to more people in the South Hills. Today and tomorrow (Sept. 17 and 18), Cutruzzula will have a booth in from of Dream Catchers Films on West Liberty Avenue with information about the Council of Three Rivers American Indian Center. Work starts on Monday, July 23.
As if you didn't face enough challenges trying to get around the South Hills, work to improve drainage and shoulders on Route 88 in Castle Shannon Borough will occur from Monday-Thursday, July 23-26, weather permitting. The work will affect traffic between Havelock Street and 6th Street-Killarney Drive, according to a news release from Pennsylvania Department of Transportation District 11-0. Traffic will be reduced to single-lane alternating use as needed along that stretch from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The contractor for the work is Allison Park Contractors, Inc., of Shaler Township. Motorists are advised to use caution and expect delays when traveling through the work zone.

The Fresh Market will be the first in Pittsburgh and the third in Pennsylvania.
The Fresh Market will open its first store in western Pennsylvania. Mt. Lebanon commissioners gave final approval with a unanimous vote Tuesday night for the gourmet supermarket chain to demolish the old Roth Carpet store on the corner of Route 19 and Connor Road and construct a new building. The Fresh Market representatives have said that construction will begin as soon as possible. The Fresh Market's application had been under consideration since last summer. Mt. Lebanon officials had concerns about traffic. Two new driveways will be built along Connor Road. One driveway will be exit-only. Traffic will be prohibited from making a left turn from the main entrance point from 4 to 7 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekends. The …
