College Board Honors Upper St. Clair School District

The township's school district made the AP achievement list.

The Upper St. Clair school district is one of fewer than 400 school districts in the nation honored by the College Board with a place on its AP Achievement List. From 2008 to 2010, the school district increased the number of students participating in the advanced placement courses from 204 to 231, and maintained the percentage of students who earned AP exam scores of 3 or higher, the score typically needed to earn college credit. "Once again, our Upper St. Clair students have demonstrated their ability to perform at the highest level on the most rigorous assessments," superintendent Patrick O'Toole said. No School? What Goes Into the Closings, Delays Decision

How Upper St. Clair's superintendent makes his decision

It's an early morning decision that affects more than 4,000 students. Should the snowfall close or delay the school day? No matter what Upper St. Clair School District's Superintendent Dr. Patrick O'Toole decides to do, he's going to make someone unhappy. "I try my hardest to make a decision the night before if possible," says Dr. O'Toole, "I like to give parents and guardians the chance to plan ahead." As parents learned on Monday and Tuesday, that's not always the case. Dr. O'Toole was up at 4:30 a.m. each day to start his decision process. At 5:30 a.m., he put schools on a two-hour delay. "It's not a cut and dry decision. There are many factors to take into account." The first thing Dr. O'Toole does is consult his network of experts. …
