Employees help out, and you can, too

This past weekend, AOL and Patch employees took an opportunity to pitch in, packing two tractor trailers worth of food, water and supplies in Dulles, VA, and Baltimore. The donations are headed to Hurricane Sandy ravaged areas in New Jersey and Long Island. Want to join the relief efforts? Fourth annual breakfast held Thursday at Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh pays tribute to everyday people who have performed extraordinary deeds.
Swimming a woman to safety as deadly flood waters swirled on Washington Boulevard. Helping a neighbor escape from a fire. Pulling a fellow firefighter out after a floor collapses below him. Providing support for military families. Working to re-energize a school district. And dedicating more than 10 years to serving the American Red Cross in its mission to help others. Those words describe the efforts of the six recipients honored Thursday at the American Red Cross' fourth annual Heroes Breakfast, a fundraiser held in the Lexus Club at Consol Energy Center in downtown Pittsburgh. WPXI-TV sportscaster Bill Phillips served as emcee for the program. The recipients were nominated by event committee members and selected by an independent panel …

Several Pittsburgh area Red Cross volunteers are in the Gulf Coast preparing to help residents there in the aftermath of Hurricane Isaac. More than a dozen people from western Pennsylvania, including a long-time Heidelberg resident, are just a few of the estimated 1,000 Red Cross volunteers who are in the area to help prepare shelters and assist anyone in need. Heidelberg resident Rose Marie Malizio flew down to Tampa, FL, late last week to help with Red Cross preparations while the storm churned toward the Gulf of Mexico. Now that Florida was spared most of the damage from Hurricane Isaac, Malizio and other local volunteers are expected to head west to help other Gulf Coast states. Other local volunteers include Joseph Korinchak of …
