Saturday Mail Delivery to End, Postal Service Announces

The U.S. Postal Service announced it will end Saturday mail delivery by Aug. 1. Speak out: How will this affect you?

Calling the six-days-per-week mail delivery business model “no longer sustainable,” the U.S. Postal Service Wednesday morning announced it will eliminate Saturday delivery of mail by Aug. 1. The plan to change delivery from six days a week to five would only affect first-class mail. Packages, mail-order medicines, priority and express mail would still be delivered on Saturdays, and local post offices will remain open for business Saturdays. According to the U.S. Postal Service, the reasons are continued economic struggles and the increasing use of the Internet for communications and bill paying by consumers. Stamp Prices Going Up This Month

U.S. Postal Service rates are set to change on Jan. 27.

The cost to mail a letter will rise slightly later this month when postal rate changes go into effect, according to the U.S. Postal Service. Stamp prices will increase one cent, from 45 cents to 46 cents, to mail one-ounce letters, effective Jan. 27. The cost for letters weighing more than one ounce will stay the same, at 20 cents for each additional ounce, according to an announcement from the postal service. Postcard stamps will also see a one-cent increase, from 32 cents to 33 cents. Letters under one ounce mailed anywhere internationally will cost $1.10, the announcement states. SUVs Collide in Upper St. Clair

The accident happened at the intersection of McLaughlin Run and Lesnett Roads.

Two SUVs crashed at the intersection of McLaughlin Run and Lesnett roads shortly before 10:30 Wednesday morning. Upper St. Clair police are at the scene working to clear the accident and direct traffic. It's unknown if there are any injuries. Motorists should avoid the area if possible. The intersection is near the Upper St. Clair Post Office.

Lesnett Road Bridge Improvements Begin

Work will continue through Oct. 15.

Work to repair the Lesnett Road Bridge begins Monday, Sept. 24, weather permitting. The construction includes concrete repairs on the bridge near the intersection with McLaughlin Run Road (near the post office). Short-term intermittent lane closures will occur as needed from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Oct. 15. The project is part of a $1.8 million contract with Allison Park Contractors Incorporated for improvements on several bridges in PennDOT's District 11. Motorists are advised to use caution and expect possible delays when traveling through the area.

What's Closed on Jan. 2

Many government offices and businesses are closed on Monday to observe the New Year holiday.

Many government agencies and businesses are observing the New Year holiday on Monday, Jan. 2. All Upper St. Clair, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania and federal offices and courts are closed. However, the Upper St. Clair Board of Commissioners will meet on Monday night shortly after 7 p.m. to reorganize. Township law states the reorganization must take place on the first Monday of the year. Traditional banks, state liquor stores and the Upper St. Clair Public Library are closed. The Post Office of Upper St. Clair is also closed, with no pickup or delivery of regular mail. The Community and Recreation Center has normal business hours for patrons Monday—from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. The Port Authority is running regular bus service, T and incline …

What's Closed on Memorial Day

A list of the Monday closings in your neighborhood.

In observance of the Memorial Day holiday, the Upper St. Clair School District is closed on Monday. All Upper St. Clair, Allegheny County, state and federal offices and courts will be closed. Banks and liquor stores will also not be open. The Post Office of Upper St. Clair will not have regular mail delivery or collection, but Express Mail will be delivered. According to the Upper St. Clair Public Works, trash and recycling collection will be delayed one day this week. If your regular trash/recycling day is Wednesday, pickup will be Thursday, June 2. I received a question from a reader about the library and CRC hours on Memorial Day. The library is closed today. The CRC is open, but with limited hours. The indoor facility is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The outdoor pool is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Enjoy your holiday!   more ›

Holiday Closings

What is closed for Christmas

There are a number of closings in and around Upper St. Clair in observance of the Christmas holiday: -Giant Eagle Market District in the South Hills closes at 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve and is closed on Christmas Day. -State liquor stores will close at 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve and will be closed on Christmas Day. -Municipal offices and banks are closed. -The Post Office will close at noon on Christmas Eve. Mail delivery will not be affected. -The Port Authority will operate on a normal scheduled Christmas Eve, The bus, T and Monongahela Incline will run on a holiday schedule on Christmas.
