A baking class is being offered nearby.
In celebration of Mother’s Day on Sunday, The Pie Place will be offering a kids baking class on Saturday, May 11. Children ages 4 and up will make a lady bug cake for their “special lady” in a class at 10 a.m. Cost is $20 and requires preregistration by calling The Pie Place at 412-835-4410. Instructors will be Jessica Gombar and Julie Accamando of The Pie Place. The Pie Place is one of the few independent scratch bakeries in Pittsburgh. It's located at 1775 N. The Indiana, PA resident is the first chairperson from outside Allegheny County.
The Pittsburgh Affiliate of Susan G. Komen has named Kerri Colvin Ballas as the chair of the Pittsburgh 2013 Race for the Cure. A resident of Indiana, PA, Ballas is the first chairperson for the Pittsburgh Race hailing from outside of Allegheny County. This year’s race will take place on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 12, on Flagstaff Hill in Schenley Park, Oakland. A six-year breast cancer survivor, Ballas became involved with Komen in 2007 when she first ran the Pittsburgh Race with friends while she was undergoing chemotherapy. “I was hooked on hope and on raising money for Komen,” Ballas says. “Raising awareness and funds for Komen gave me the opportunity to fight back and help other women.” Now, Ballas and her team, Paint …

Having a difficult time deciding what to get your mom for Mother's Day? Stop by the first annual Spring Arts and Craft Market at the old recreation center on McLaughlin Run Road. The recreation center has been transformed into a gift shop full of unique options. From original paintings to colorful serving platters and utensils, there's something for every type of mother. The Upper St. Clair League for the Arts organized the market. Members decided to host a second market during the year, in addition to the Sugarplum Shop in November, because of the demand. The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is gearing up for its 19th annual Pittsburgh run. This Sunday, which also is Mother’s Day, it is estimated that more than 30,000 participants and 300 volunteers will come together on Flagstaff Hill in Schenley Park to unite in an effort to help raise funds to help those affected by breast cancer, with the ultimate goal of finding a cure. Gail McTiernan, of Upper St. Clair, is a breast cancer survivor who has participated in the Komen Pittsburgh Race for the Cure for several years. This is her first year as a member of the Pink Honor Roll, which honors the top fundraisers. McTiernan and 24 others raised than $114,000 to help fight against breast cancer.
