Local Magistrate Running for Superior Court

District Judge Robert Wyda says he's at a point in his life and career that he's ready for the position.

Robert Wyda, the magisterial district judge for Upper St. Clair and Bethel Park, is running for Pennsylvania Superior Court. "I'm at a point in my life and career that this is a challenge and step I'm ready to make," Wyda said. "After all of my experience, I feel very comfortable and confident in my ability." Wyda has been a lawyer for 28 years and he's been the magisterial district judge for 14 years. His district of Upper St. Clair and Bethel Park is one of the most populous magisterial districts in Pennsylvania with 53,000 residents. Wyda, a Republican, said he has received a lot of positive encouragement about his candidacy. Dozens of Local Residents Sued Each Month For Credit Card Debt

Law firms buy the credit card debt and file civil lawsuits.

Upper St. Clair, an affluent Pittsburgh suburb, is not immune to credit card debt. Magisterial District Judge Robert Wyda said he hears up to 10 credit card debt cases a week. He estimates half the people being sued are from Upper St. Clair, even though the township has a smaller population than the other municipality in his jurisdiction—Bethel Park. The plaintiffs are commonly law firms from Philadelphia or New Jersey. "For me the issue is that the plaintiffs usually don't have the evidence to proceed," Wyda said. However, the defendants often don't contest the delinquent debt and will enter into a voluntary agreement to pay off the debt. Man Charged With Breaking Into Upper St. Clair Home

A theft victim in Upper St. Clair helped police track down the suspect with an iPad app. Jason Paul Hoffman, 33, of Mt. Washington, was held for court on four charges, including burglary, on Monday in district Judge Robert Wyda's courtroom. The victim looked up the location of the iPad after returning to the Glo Min Drive home to find it had been burglarized and called 911, according to the criminal complaint filed by Upper St. Clair police. Prosecutors accused Hoffman of breaking into the home by climbing on a piece of outdoor furniture on a raised deck into an unlocked window at the home.  Along with the iPad, Hoffman is accused of stealing jewelry, cash and other electronics, according to the complaint.    Judge Wyda also heard the …

DUI Suspect Held for Trial

DUI charges against a Mt. Pleasant man were held for court Monday in district Judge Robert Wyda's courtroom. Upper St. Clair police arrested Kevin L. Bell, 27, at 2 a.m. on Nov. 15 on Thorntree Drive and Boyce Road. According to a criminal complaint filed by the police, the arresting officer observed Bell's car swerving on Route 19.  Bell's blood alcohol level was measured at .194 percent, according to the complaint. The legal level of alcohol in Pennsylvania is .08 percent. Hearing Rescheduled The preliminary hearing for Samuel Butler Vendeland, of Moon Township, was rescheduled for March 18. Charges Reduced in Suspected Drug Case

Charges against a Scott Township man were reduced to a summary disorderly conduct. Adam Cornelius Higgs, 21, agreed to plead guilty to the charge Monday in district Judge Robert Wyda's courtroom.  Upper St. Clair police filed charges against Higgs after finding 17 grams of suspected marijuana in individually wrapped bags after Higgs crashed his vehicle on Bower Hill Road on Jan. 15, according to a criminal complaint. Continued Again Charges against Janet Pyszka will be dismissed after she finishes paying $11,200 in restitution to the alleged Upper St. Clair victim.

Car Searched Following Traffic Stop, Charges Filed

The latest from the office of Magisterial District Judge Robert Wyda.

A Moon Township man is facing drug charges following a traffic stop in Upper St. Clair. An officer stated in a criminal complaint filed with district Judge Robert Wyda's office that when driver Samuel Butler Vendeland, 28, turned left on Route 19 from Boyce Road on Dec. 12, he passed his police cruiser and several other vehicles on the wrong side of the road.  When the officer pulled over the car, he smelled suspected marijuana.  The Baldwin police K-9 unit was brought to the scene to investigate the smell from outside of the vehicle and then a search warrant was obtained, according to the complaint.  Suspected marijuana was found in the car, according to the complaint. Mt. Pleasant Man Charged With DUI in USC

Police Arrest Suspected South Hills Village Purse Snatcher

The latest from the office of Magisterial District Judge Robert Wyda.

A woman accused of stealing another woman's purse in the lower level public restroom in South Hills Village was held for trial on Monday. Kathie Ann Schade, 31, of Larimer, is charged with one count false identification to law enforcement authority. Through interviews, Upper St. Clair police identified Schade as a purse theft suspect on Nov. 26, according to a criminal complaint filed with district Judge Robert Wyda's office. When an officer asked for her identification, she told him a different name and Social Security number, the officer stated. Gas Station Robbery Suspects Held for Trial

The men are in the Allegheny County Jail.

Three young men accused of robbing the St. Clair Mini Market on Route 19 at gunpoint were held for trial Monday. Charles E. Clark, of Taylorstown, PA; David A. Piatt, of Washington, PA; and Matthew C. McDonald, of Washington, PA; are accused of stealing $650 from the clerk on Nov. 5, 2012. Clark was arraigned and waived his right to a preliminary hearing in district Judge Robert Wyda's courtroom on Monday. His bond was set at $25,000. Judge Wyda reduced the bond on Piatt and McDonald from $250,000 to $25,000. Upper St. Clair police stated in a criminal complaint that the Pennsylvania State Police in Washington, PA received information that linked the three men to the Upper St. Clair robbery and other thefts.
