Three police officers from Collier Township and Bridgeville are being hailed as heroes for stopping a woman from leaping to her death off an Interstate 79 overpass and possibly injuring unsuspecting motorists below. Robert Ferrence and Officer Steve Oberle of Collier, and Officer Roger Itzel of Bridgeville were awarded a commendation by Collier Township officials Wednesday night for their efforts to save the woman and prevent others from being hurt. Collier police Chief Thomas Devin said the officers received a call on Oct. 24 of a woman sitting on the I-79 overpass along Prestley Road with her feet dangling over the edge. PennDOT District 12 is advising motorists of the ramp closures at Interstate 79 Exit 43 (Houston/Eighty Four) from 8 p.m. Wednesday through 6 a.m. Thursday. The northbound Exit 43 offramp to state Route 519 and the northbound on- ramp to I-79 north will be closed. The ramps will be closed in order to allow crews to perform a pavement overlay, the department said in a press release. Dozens of police officers conducted one of the largest sobriety checkpoints in the South Hills on Wednesday night when they patrolled Route 50 in Bridgeville. The officers stopped 35 motorists on Washington Pike near Bridgeville Auto from 7:30 p.m. to shortly after 11 p.m. Bridgeville police Chief Chad King said the DUI checkpoint netted one arrest for driving under the influence of drugs, while officers issues 13 citations, wrote 15 warnings for expired inspection or registration tags and towed five vehicles. Another person was arrested for driving with altered tags. PennDOT is getting ready to widen Washington Pike near the Bursca Business Park in South Fayette and wants motorists to view proposals for the reconstruction project on the road, which provides many Upper St. Clair residents with access to Interstate 79. The department is asking “interested parties” to come to the Fairview Volunteer Fire Department to view replacement proposals for the bridge over Coal Run on July 23. PennDOT recently renamed the Heidelberg/Kirwan Heights interchange of Interstate 79 to “Heidelberg/Collier Exit,” and not everyone is happy about the change. The exit regularly serves many Upper St. Clair residents and their visitors. Kirwan Heights fire Chief Mark Lewis blasted the decision, saying it could cause confusion during emergency calls near Exit 55 of I-79, while also erasing the village along Route 50 from the interstate map. “They’re taking away the history of this community and all the small communities around this area,” said Lewis, who also lives in the Kirwan Heights neighborhood of Collier Township. “With a rivet gun, they just wiped Kirwan Heights off the map.” PennDOT made alterations to the interstate exit signs this …

One person died Thursday night when a car crashed into a gasoline tanker near the Bridgeville rest stop.
A Washington County man died late Thursday night when the vehicle he was driving crashed into a gasoline tanker truck on Interstate 79 near the Bridgeville rest stop, an Allegheny County emergency dispatcher said. Bradford Carter, 40, of Eighty Four, died at the scene of the crash, according to the Allegheny County medical examiner's office. The crash happened shortly after 11 p.m. Thursday when the vehicle and tanker collided in the southbound lanes of I-79 in South Fayette. State police shut down the roadway and hazardous material crews were called to the scene for the possibility of leaking fuel. Police were detouring cars onto the Bridgeville exit to avoid the crash scene.

Traffic in both directions on Interstate 79 in South Fayette Township will be stopped intermittently on Saturday morning, March 10, weather permitting. Brief stoppages of 15 minutes or less will occur between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. Saturday in the area between Exit 54 (Bridgeville) and Exit 48 (Southpointe), according to PennDOT. Crews from Metropolitan Communications Group will be performing cable work above I-79. For more information on the work contact Metropolitan Communications Group at 610-696-6910. Multiple accidents have been reported.
According to a Washington County 911 supervisor, multiple accidents have been reported on I-79, including a tractor-trailer in the northbound lanes near the Houston exit. Nancy, That is a moron comment, the snow didn't start until 9:30AM or so. The salt trucks get stuck in the traffic behind or between all of the cars that don't need to be out in the snowstorm. And a large portion of them do not have snow tires and some of them have trouble driving in clear dry weather , let alone in a snow storm.
