It's the final evening to buy fresh produce at the Upper St. Clair Farmers Market organized by the USC Lions Club.
Another Upper St. Clair Farmers Market season is coming to an end. This evening, from 4 to 7 p.m., will be the last chance this year for customers to visit the market held in the Westminster Presbyterian Church parking lot. Pumpkins and other fall goods will be available for purchase. In addition, customers can shop with a new vendor. Evelyn's Elegant Edibles, which sells soup and cake mixes and dry rubs, joined the market during the second half of the season. The USC Lions Club organizers said they expect to hold the Farmers Market again next summer. Have you visited the Farmers Market this year? Why or why not? Tell us in the comments.

Here's some food for thought from local wellness coach and nutritional instructor Kathy Gillen.
Families that are tired of the same old summer activities – the pool, the park and eating at the drive-throughs – should head off to a farmers market this week! It is National Farmers Market Week, and it is a wonderful time to explore local produce with your family. When shown a variety of vegetables, many children can’t identify even the basics. Our kids have become removed from their food because so many of their choices come in bags, boxes and pre-packaged cups. But a stroll through a farmers market allows children to get up close and personal with not only their food, but also their farmer. It’s great to approach a farmers market as a fun-filled event. Depending on the age of your children, a scavenger hunt adds to the excitement of …

This time of year, Teresa Wilson looks forward to Thursdays. “I know that I’m not going to cook,” she says as she goes from booth to booth, sizing up what’s available. She’s a regular at the farmers’ market presented by the Upper St. Clair Lions Club. From 4 to 7 p.m. each Thursday from the beginning of June through the end of September, the parking lot across Devonwood Drive from Westminster Presbyterian Church becomes the focal point for prepared food, spices, produce and perennials, among other items. “I spread the word,” says Wilson, a township resident likes to stop at the market on the way home. “I tell other people, because if it’s something I like, I know they’re going to like it, too.” The market, in its third year, is drawing …

It won't be the same for the Boyce Road Gardeners after with passing of longtime organization president Dolores "Dolly" Hoover.
Everyone knew Dolores Hoover by Dolly, which naturally led to some wordplay involving a famous musical. "Hello, Dolly,” Diane Lane recalls. “It was a perfect name for her. When you saw her, it made you feel good.” Diane and many others around Upper St. Clair got to know Dolly from her seemingly perpetual presence in the community gardens at the corner of Boyce Mayview Park. In fact, as Diane would drive home on Morrow Road past the gardens’ parking lot, she’d gotten used to seeing Dolly’s car. This spring, Diane realized the car hadn’t been around. Then, at one of the farmers’ markets Dolly was found of frequenting, Diane discovered her friend had died on June 2. She was 85. “They call this Dolly Lane over here,” Upper St. Clair resident …

The Upper St. Clair Lions Club is assisting with a puppy from the Leader Dogs for the Blind in Rochester, Michigan. Marielle Snyder, a high school freshman, stopped to visit the Lions at the Upper St Clair Lions Club Farmers Market with the five-month-old labrador puppy she is raising for the program. She will train the dog, Murphy, for a year and then return him to Leader Dogs for further training. The USC Lions have agreed to assist with the veterinary expenses while Marielle is raising this future leader dog.
