The representative showed up to a hearing Tuesday in a wheelchair.
U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy (R-Upper St. Clair) had some of his constituents worried Tuesday after arriving at the Veterans’ Affairs Committee's investigative hearing on the outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease at the VA Hospital in Pittsburgh in a wheel chair. Murphy is recovering from a herniated disc. His doctors asked him to limit some of his movement through the week. He’s recovering well and is maintaining a full schedule, according to his spokesperson. Twitter was abuzz with the news when Washington correspondent of Cox Media Group Seth MacFarlene sent out the tweet: Rep Tim Murphy (R-PA) enters House VA Cmte hearing in wheelchair. Suffering back injury, spokeswoman says. Murphy was able to get out of the wheelchair and get into a regular …

How you can help keep your neighborhood safe this winter.
The Upper St. Clair Volunteer Fire Department issued a reminder to residents on its new Facebook page to keep neighborhood fire hydrants clear of snow. As we all are aware, the snow has started to consistently fall. To help us execute our duties on the fire scene in a timely manner, we ask you to do your best to keep the area around fire hydrants clear of snow. This will help us to locate and use the hydrants immediately instead of us searching and digging them out. Your help is greatly appreciated throughout the winter season! Supporters crowded a meeting and a Facebook page has been started.
By the time she reached ninth grade, Emma Pasekoff was already falling through the cracks. The Mt. Lebanon High School teen fell in with the wrong crowd and lost interest in school. She began losing the respect of her parents, who thought she would never graduate. “I started losing hope for myself. I didn’t care about getting good grades,” said Pasekoff, 20, of Sewickley. “Everything was just immensely deteriorating.” As a last-ditch effort, the 10th grader decided with her parents and principals to try the Alternative Center for Education, a separate alternative school on the Parkway West Career and Technology Center campus. Pasekoff focused on schoolwork, took up the culinary arts program at Parkway and turned her situation around, going…

Check it out—here's how.
PennDOT’s newly launched Facebook page gives Pennsylvanians even more ways to interact with the agency and find valuable transportation news and tips. “As social media becomes more popular with our customers, they rightfully expect that they can find information in ways they’re used to receiving it,” PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch said. “We’re pleased to now have another way that we can communicate with Pennsylvanians and transportation stakeholders.” The new PennDOT Facebook page features: “We encourage Pennsylvanians and others who travel in our state to visit our Facebook page and provide comments, ask questions or even share concerns,” Schoch said. “We take our mission seriously and that includes ensuring people can find out about …

One lady and two guys team up for a smooth sound, mixing old favorites with enthusiastically received originals.
You've probably heard a local band playing in your neighborhood. Sometimes against your will. But you'll probably want to listen if the band called LocaL comes to your neighborhood. That's right. The second "L" is capitalized, too, because that's the first letter of the first name of two of the original band members. You follow? Well, they're down to only one name starting with "L," but they're still LocaL. And they're local, crossing through Upper St. Clair to meet up with one another: Vocalist Leigh-Anne Yost, the remaining "L," lives in Bridgeville; guitarist Kyle Ingram and percussionist-guitarist Zack DeFelice are Peters Township High School graduates. Got it? Good. OK, let's hear from Leigh-Anne, who's a heck of a writer along with …

No, the digging out of hydrants is a neighborhood responsibility. Doing the work is part of being a citizen of the municipality, and having concern for others who live near you. Expecting others to do the job is another example of abrogating our tasks off to others, tasks we know we should be doing ourselves. "... debrie ..." Gotta love Patch comments!   more ›
