School District Pushes Tax Credit Program

Why not make sure the tax your business is paying is going to the Upper St. Clair School District?

The Upper St. Clair School District is encouraging business owners—large and small—to participate in the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit program. The program allows businesses to direct a percentage of their state taxes to fund innovative educational programming in Upper St. Clair. Eligible businesses will get a 75 percent tax credit for donations. That tax credit increases to 90 percent if the company commits to making the same donation for two consecutive years. A business paying taxes in Pennsylvania can apply for up to $300,000 in tax credits annually. Rep. Maher Reacts to USC Board's Voucher Opposal

State Rep. John Maher, R-Upper St. Clair, said he also opposes tuition vouchers.

State Rep. John Maher, R-Upper St. Clair, said he received and read through the resolution opposing vouchers that the Upper St. Clair School Directors adopted on Monday night and responded to board President Harry Kunselman. "I thanked him and the board for providing the resolution. It's nice to hear from liked-minded neighbors," Maher said. "I've been against vouchers since its conception." Tuition vouchers would allow children of low-income families at failing public schools to transfer to private or parochial schools. The state-funded vouchers would cost anywhere from $5,000 to $14,000 a child, depending on the school district. The Upper St. Clair School Board's concern is that the program would take money away from public education. …

If private schools want public money, ie tax dollars, then they should/must be subject to the same rules/policies/laws, etc as public schools. That means - separation of church and state - no praying and Friday mass in parochial schools; PSSAs in all schools; elections for board of directors in all schools; access to all in all schools - no more picking and choosing and kicking out in private …   more ›
