Over a ton of supplies donated by USC faculty, staff, and families delivered to Hurricane Sandy victims thanks to the generosity of community members and local businesses.
A colleague of my father’s, a gentleman named Kevin, was on the “Miracle on the Hudson” flight that, after an engine emergency, landed in the Hudson River. Kevin was in the back of the plane, and as he waded through shin-deep water to the emergency exits he saw numerous examples of the inherent goodness in people: passengers steadied each other on the wet, slick airplane wings, buckled the elderly and children into the first available life jackets, and instinctively leapt into the icy waters after those who slipped off of the wings and fell in. “In this moment of crisis,” Kevin told my father, “it became clear to me that people are, by nature, inherently good.” In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, I too I have had the privilege of witnessing …

E.S. Yetman Advisors in Upper St. Clair is accepting donations of supplies for kids in need.
The Pittsburgh Tote Bag Project's website has listed places in the Pittsburgh area where people can donate new and gently used school supplies for students starting the new year. E.S. Yetman Advisors, 1121 Boyce Road, Suite 2050 in Upper St Clair is accepting donations of school supplies for families of active duty military and veterans through Sept. 9. Donations must be preapproved, so be sure to call or email the organization to ensure they can accept your items. Teachers often purchase gently used items to share with their students or organize activities, according to the Tote Bag Project website. Through the tough times, the organization pushes forward to end hunger.
The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank continues to put food on the tables of people in need across the region—with the number of families served growing every month because of an economy riddled with layoffs, unemployment benefits running out and other economic challenges. Currently serving 120,000 people per month, according to Iris Valanti, public relations director at the food bank, the organization also has been serving 3,500 new families every month this year. “We are seeing the results of some layoffs and unemployment and also underemployment—people making less wages or working part-time,” Valanti said. “The economy has definitely made a difference.” In 2009, the food bank was serving 1,500 new families a month, while in 2010, …

Donations to eligible nonprofits receive a matching gift through the Pittsburgh Day of Giving.
Monetary gifts to area nonprofit organizations go a little further on The Day of Giving 2011. This year's event, sponsored by Pittsburgh Gives, an initiative of the Pittsburgh Foundation, is on Tuesday from 12 a.m. until 11:59:59 p.m. All donations during that 24-hour period will receive a pro-rated portion of the match pool—$725,000 for Pittsburgh Gives and $100,000 for Westmoreland Gives. Only credit card donations received through www.pittsburghgives.org during the 24 hours of Oct. 4 will be matched for this event. No donations via check, cash or stock can be accepted.
