Holiday Snowfall Causes Sled Shortage in Upper St. Clair

Many stores are sold out.

Stores in and around Upper St. Clair can't keep up with the demand for sleds. The holiday week's snowfall and cold temperatures have made for perfect sledding conditions for local kids. The Upper St. Clair 3-hole golf course has been packed with sledders every day. Dick's Sporting Goods at South Hills Village has no sleds left in stock. The same story over at Toys R Us. Both stores have trucks coming on Friday, but it's unclear if there will be any new sleds for sale. Do you know of a store with sleds still in stock? Or do you have a sled alternative to share with local kids? Please share in the comments below. Also, share the photos you took of your kids sledding this past week in the media box above. Dick’s, Walmart Suspend Sale of Certain Semi-Automatic Rifles—What Do You Think?

In the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary mass shooting, Dick's Sporting Goods also has removed all guns from the store closest to Newtown, CT.

In the wake of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, two major retailers are pulling the plug on sales of certain semi-automatic weapons nationwide.  Dick’s Sporting Goods, one of the largest sporting goods retailers in the world, has suspended sales of some semi-automatic rifles from all stores. The company, which is headquartered in Moon Township, also has removed all guns from its chain closest to Newtown, CT. In a statement, the store said it ordered the move out of respect for the victims and families of Newtown. Friday’s shooting left 20 children, all between the ages of 6 and 7, and six adults dead. “We are extremely saddened by the unspeakable tragedy that occurred last week in Newtown, CT, and our hearts go out to the …

Supermarket Scraps Upper St. Clair Location Plans

There were plans for Earth Fare to take the place of the former Dick's Sporting Goods store.

Representatives for Earth Fare, a North Carolina-based natural foods grocer, have scrapped their plans to come to Upper St. Clair. They were going to present to the planning commission last Thursday, but pulled their application shortly before the meeting, according to Director of Community Development Scott Brilhart. The plans called for an Earth Fare store in the former Dick's Sporting Goods location behind South Hills Village mall. Brilhart said the representatives did not explain why they changed their minds. Whole Foods announced their lease at the planned development on the corner of Route 19 and Fort Couch Road on Nov. 8. Click here for the timetable. Earth Fare would have been the fifth grocery store to join the existing Giant …

'The Bus' Stops in Upper St. Clair

Former Pittsburgh Steeler Jerome Bettis attracted a large crowd at the new Dick's Sporting Goods store.

Hundreds of fans wearing their black and gold best were on hand as "The Bus" rolled into town Saturday afternoon. Former Pittsburgh Steeler Jerome Bettis signed autographs at the new Dick's Sporting Goods store at South Hills Village. Some fans camped out in front of the store overnight to ensure an autograph wristband. Rick DeBenedetto, a self-proclaimed "big Bettis fan," said he showed up at the store at about 5 a.m. after driving into town on Friday from Rochester, NY. "I just always liked the way he played," he said. Heather Yee, of Dormont, brought her son and nephew to meet Bettis. Dick's employees allowed them to stand in the front of the line because her son, Brandon, lives with autism. "Things are very challenging for him, so this…

The new Dick's Sporting Goods store is now open in the top two floors of the former Boscov's store in South Hills Village. And this afternoon, legendary Pittsburgh Steeler Jerome Bettis will be on hand to give out autographs from 1 to 3 p.m. More than 100 customers stood outside of the store in a line Friday morning for the store's official grand opening. Managers had to hire up to 100 new employees for the new location. "This (Dick's Sporting Goods) will bring people to the mall and boost sales throughout the mall," said U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy, R…

Petition Urges Dick's Sporting Goods to End Ammunition Sales

Gun control advocates are asking the Moon-based sporting goods retailer to stop stocking high-powered magazines.

A Mississippi teacher is circulating a petition online requesting that Dick's Sporting Goods discontinue the sale of high-powered ammunition in light of a Colorado movie theater massacre that killed 12 and wounded 58.  The petition, which has gained more than 4,000 signatures, asks the national sporting goods retailer, which is headquartered in Moon Township, to stop selling high-capacity magazines in its stores and online.   24-year-old James Holmes is charged with 24 counts of murder and 116 counts of attempted murder after Colorado police said he opened fire last month in a theater during a showing of the Batman film Dark Knight Rises, killing more than a dozen moviegoers. Authorities said he used a high-powered, semi-automatic assault…

The article is a little vague. Are we talking about ammunition, or magazines? If ammunition, then how do we define "high powered" and why is that relevant? Most sporting cartridges are more "high powered" than those associated with modern military weapons, so are we talking about removing all rifle ammo from the shelves except for .22s? I agree with Mr, Trombetta's sentiment above, but frankly …   more ›
