Contract Approved to Manage Deer in Upper St. Clair
USDA Wildlife will continue to conduct deer culling for no more than $37,500.
Upper St. Clair commissioners Monday night approved a contract of no more than $37,500 with the USDA Wildlife to continue its deer culling program in the township. USDA Wildlife first implemented its deer control program in 2005 to decrease the amount of property damage, nuisance complaints and deer-vehicle collisions throughout the township, with special emphasis along Route 19. The number of reported accidents with deer have decreased since the program began. In 2004 there were 207 accidents, and in 2011 there were 62. The culling areas are both public and private. USDA Wildlife obtains written permission from involved property owners prior to culling. During the 2011-12 program, USDA Wildlife reported killing 122 deer in the township. …

I am a resident & avid hunter and think the township should offer the local archery hunters the opportunity to help manage the deer population in a ethical manner. In lieu of paying this amount of money, I hunt with a group of gentlemen that would be more than happy to assist as well as working with the organizations who donate the meat.
