Upper St. Clair is pondering whether to change the definition of a daycare to allow a Goddard School be built in the township.
Upper St. Clair is pondering whether to change the definition of a daycare to allow a Goddard School be built in the township. The township planning commission rejected the idea in January, but the Board of Commissioners will make the final decision, which could be as soon as May 6. The property’s owner, Alex Bunson, pleaded with the commissioners at their Monday night hearing to amend the definition to allow the daycare center on the “unique property” behind Chick-Fil-A that is actually zoned as residential. But he said a Goddard School would be a “tremendous benefit” for the community and working parents. “There’s been an increased need in the community and the benefit of these groups … are that they offer a service from almost birth to …

The facility is proposed for North Highland Road.
Upper St. Clair commissioners established an April 1 public hearing for the applicant trying to bring The Goddard School to the township. Commissioners will hear public testimony on a proposal to amend the township's zoning law to allow a daycare facility to be built at 1630 North Highland Rd. The location is behind the Trader Joe's and Chick-fil-A, and next to KinderCare of Mt. Lebanon. The township's current zoning does not allow daycare facilities on the property. The current zoning would allow similar facilities, such as a nursing home, on the property if it acquired an additional .006 of an acre of land (the ordinance requires 1 acre). The planning commission voted last month to deny the request. "They had concerns about how the …

The Goddard School would like to expand to Upper St. Clair.
The Upper St. Clair Planning Commission last week voted to table the vote on a proposed zoning amendment to revise the definition of a daycare center. The Goddard School would like to demolish the existing house at 1630 North Highland Rd. and build a daycare center. The problem? The property is .994 acres and the existing law in Upper St. Clair requires 1 acre of land for a daycare center. The landowner, Alex Bunson, will meet with township staff in the next month. The planning commission is expected to again take up the issue on Jan. 17. The proposed new daycare center sits next to the existing KinderCare of Mt. Lebanon on North Highland Road. Bob Santo, owner of the Goddard School in Peters Township, told planning commissioners in …

Developer would like to build next to KinderCare.
A developer proposed to the Upper St. Clair Planning Commission Thursday night to demolish the existing house at 1630 North Highland Rd. and build a Goddard School daycare center. The property sits next to the existing KinderCare of Mt. Lebanon on North Highland Road. The planning commissioners tabled the hearing Thursday night so the developer, Alex Bonson, could work out some issues with the township staff. The property is zoned R-3, which requires the daycare property to be at least 1 acre. The property is just .994 acres. Director of Community Development Scott Brilhart also said he had concerns if the plan contained adequate buffers. The proposed plan contains a daycare center, playground and parking lot. Bob Santo, owner of the …

Matthew Byars pleaded guilty to molesting the young boys while work at Tender Care Learning Center in Scott Township.
The Tender Care Learning Center worker accused of molesting several boys, including some at the Scott Township daycare, pleaded guilty to 13 counts of abuse. Matthew Byars, 26, of the North Side, will receive 35 to 70 years in prison as part of a the plea deal reached with prosecutors on Monday, Allegheny County district attorney spokesman Mike Manko said. Manko said the agreement before Allegheny County Common Pleas Court Judge Donna Jo McDaniel was not ideal, but it protects the abused children from having to testify during a trial. “Any time you’re dealing with a crime with the sexual abuse of children, one thing you have to consider is the welfare of the children involved,” Manko told Patch. Pittsburgh police arrested Byars in July …

There are certain ways to ask a child if he or she has been abused.
Determining whether a young child has been a sex assault victim at the hands of an adult is sometimes difficult to know. So in light of the multiple allegations against a Scott Township daycare worker, investigators are instructing parents to ask non-leading questions if they think their child may be a victim. Scott police Sgt. Jeffrey Skees said it is important for parents to open up to their children without planting ideas into their head. “Were there any times that made them feel uncomfortable at the daycare?” Skees said is a good starting question. “Different parents have different approaches. You don’t want to put an idea into a child’s head. But was there anything that made them feel uncomfortable? Talk to them about good touches and…

"People living in the neighborhood near the property oppose the daycare’s construction..." That is enough for me. Do what they will with the "text amendment" and the 1 vs .994 acres issue. If the neighbors don't want it, then the Goddard school should look elsewhere or spend a little more time understanding the neighborhood concerns and addressing them.   more ›
