Murphy, a Former Psychologist, Responds to Connecticut School Tragedy

Murphy shares 10 suggestions to help adults reassure and comfort children during this difficult and confusing time.

U.S. Rep. Murphy (R-Upper St. Clair) released the following statement on the violent shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT.   "(Friday's) senseless tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School leaves us all shocked. We don’t have words to explain our grief, and we cannot begin to understand what would cause an individual to inflict this kind of pain on fellow human beings, let alone defenseless children. To the grieving families, our deepest condolences go out to you all. For the many teachers, first responders, police officers and emergency personnel who were focused on returning the students to safety, we thank you for putting yourself in harm's way to save a child's life. We hold you all close in our prayers.” Prior to …

Patch Poll: What's the Best Way to Avoid the 'Fiscal Cliff?'

Tell us what you think is the best way for President Obama and Congress to work together to keep tax rates from rising and major spending cuts from being enacted in January.

Last year, Congress and President Barack Obama agreed to a program—now known as the "fiscal cliff"— to reduce the federal deficit. If Congress and the president don't reach an agreement within the next few weeks, tax rates will rise in January for almost all Americans and major spending cuts will automatically occur next year in most government spending programs. Democrats and Republicans don't agree about how to best raise the federal government's revenues. The president and most congressional Democrats favor tax rate increases on the wealthiest Americans. Most congressional Republicans call instead for closing loopholes and reforming the tax code. Both parties have indicated a willingness to implement spending cuts. A point of …

My mom lost all of her stock in the bailout. She's still bitter about it, but she would've lost it anyway if they had liquidated without the bailout. She probably should've sold it in the 90s. Still, I'm thankful that the bailout agreement left some legacy money/health care for my grandmother, who is practically dependent on it today.   more ›

Update: 911th Airlift Wing to Remain Open

Defense Secretary Panetta halts aircraft retirements at base until Congress takes action.

Update: U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy, R-Upper St. Clair, announced today that the 911th Airlift Wing in Moon Township will remain open for at least one more year following a directive from Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.  Panetta directed Air Force officials to delay any aircraft transfers or retirements until Congress takes action on the measure. The Secretary toured the 911th in June.  The reprieve will maintain more than 1,100 military and 300 civilian jobs at the air base. From the Congressman:  “This is welcome news for our region’s military families and an important recognition of the role Congress must play in authorizing base closures and major changes to our military’s structure. Even with this decision, our efforts are not finished, and …

Nuns Spread Simple Message: 'Reasonable Revenue for Responsible Programs'

The Nuns on the Bus tour stopped in Mt. Lebanon during its cross-country trip to speak with the staff of U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy about the federal budget.

To make sure her followers got her message loud and clear, Sister Simone Campbell had them repeat it: “Reasonable revenue for responsible programs.” That’s the Cliff’s Notes version of the federal budget proposition put forth by the group of women traveling through nine states, calling themselves Nuns on the Bus for their mode of transportation. “There’s an alternative. It’s called the Faithful Budget,” Campbell said Wednesday afternoon following the nuns’ stop to speak with staff members at the Mt. Lebanon office of U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy, R-Upper St. Clair. “It has 55 pages. That’s a little daunting when you’re trying to do a sound bite, but I can it to you in five words, and we’re going to learn real fast.” Many of the 150 or so who …
