New Candy Shop Offers Sweet Treats

The Sweet Shoppe & Nut House, which just opened in Collier Town Square, offers a wide variety of fudge, caramel, chocolate, bark, rice crispy snacks, roasted nuts and gelato.

The sweet smell of fudge and chocolate surrounds you when you enter the new local candy shop in Collier Towns Square. The Sweet Shoppe & Nut House offers a wide variety of fudge, caramel, chocolate, bark, rice crispy snacks, roasted nuts and gelato. You’d think it would be a haven for kids, but it’s also a big attraction for adults. That’s exactly what Laurie Temple, who opened the store in August, hoped when she took the leap from her job as a medical sales rep to become a small business owner. “Everything is very fun,” Temple said. “I wanted to find a business that would appeal to my whole family.” The key to the shop, Temple said, is that her “great staff” cooks the fudge and other treats from scratch. Bottom Dollar Opening New Grocery Stores Soon

The discount grocery store chain will open locations along Route 50 in Collier and Scott later this month.

The new Bottom Dollar Food discount grocery stores in the Pittsburgh area are expected to open later this month. Scott Township officials said the new grocery store located on Washington Avenue in the shopping center that currently houses Family Video will open Jan. 26. Meanwhile, Collier Township officials said the supermarket built in Great Southern Shopping Center was inspected Friday and should open by the end of January. Other locations for the stores in the Pittsburgh area include Castle Shannon, Baldwin, Penn Hills, McKeesport, Butler, Ambridge and Aliquippa. New Military Commissary 'Clears Last Hurdle'

The new commissary in Moon will replace the PX at the old Charles E. Kelly Support Facility in Collier.

Construction on a new Moon Township military commissary can now "move forward without delay," according to a statement from Western Pennsylvania's congressional leaders. More than $17 million in federal funding has been freed for construction of the commissary, according to a joint statement issued Monday by U.S. Sens. Bob Casey and Pat Toomey and U.S. Reps. Tim Murphy, Jason Altmire,  Mike Doyle, Bill Shuster and Mark Critz. Construction on the project was originally slated to begin in July, said U.S. Defense Commissary Agency spokesman Richard Brink. The commissary will cover 43,000 square feet at the intersection of University Boulevard and Interstate 376. It will serve as a trading post and grocery store for active and retired …

Short-Term I-79 Restrictions Begin Friday

PennDOT District 11 is announcing short-term lane closures on I-79 in Bridgeville Borough and Collier and South Fayette townships.   Single lane traffic will occur in both directions from Washington County to half a mile north of the Bridgeville interchange (Exit 54) according to the following schedule:   Friday, Nov. 4: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.   Friday and Saturday, Nov. 4-5: 7 p.m. Friday to 7 p.m. Saturday   Monday-Thursday, Nov. 7-10: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.   Friday, Nov. 11: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. No restrictions will occur during the peak periods weekdays between 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3 p.m to 7 p.m.   The $2.6 million project includes repairs on three bridges, overlays, joint sealing, concrete roadway patching, sign and …

There will be overnight single lane traffic on I-79 in Bridgeville Borough and Collier and South Fayette townships will continue this week Nov. 1 through Nov. 3, weather permitting. Crews will be sawing and sealing the roadway. Single lane traffic will occur in both directions from Washington County to half a mile north of the Bridgeville interchange (Exit 54) from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tuesday through Thursday nights. Single lane traffic in the three-lane section will not begin until 9 p.m. The $2.6 million project includes repairs on three bridges, overlays, joint sealing, concrete roadway patching, sign and guiderail upgrades and other improvements on 3.7 miles of I-79 from Washington County to half a mile north of the Bridgeville …

Be Aware of I-79 Single Lane Traffic Friday and Saturday

Single lane traffic will occur in both directions from Washington County to half a mile north of the Bridgeville interchange (Exit 54) from 7 p.m. Friday through 7 p.m. on Saturday.

There will be single lane traffic on I-79 in Bridgeville Borough and Collier and South Fayette townships, Allegheny County, will occur on Friday and Saturday Oct. 28 and 29, weather permitting.   Single lane traffic will occur in both directions from Washington County to half a mile north of the Bridgeville interchange (Exit 54) from 7 p.m. Friday through 7 p.m. on Saturday. Single lane traffic in the three-lane section will not begin until 9 p.m. Crews will be sawing and sealing roadway joints. PennDOT is also reminding motorists approaching lane restricted highway work zones to use all open lanes to the merge point. Please be courteous to other motorists and allow them to merge. Expect Delays on I-79 and Route 50

Crews will be doing weekend work on both major roadways.

PennDOT is urging motorists to be patient this weekend as construction continues on Route 50 and Interstate 79. Workers will be on Route 50 from Bower Hill Road in Bridgeville all the way to Boden Avenue in Carnegie patching concrete, rebuilding inlets and replacing curbs. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane in both directions while work is done from 8 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Monday. Meanwhile, work will continue on Interstate 79 near the Bridgeville exit. Only one lane of traffic will be open in both directions from the Washington County line to Bridgeville from 7 p.m. Friday until 11 a.m. Sunday. “Motorists should expect significant delays,” PennDOT said in a news release.
