The 72,000 square foot facility will replace Bladerunners.
Fundraising has begun for a new YMCA in Bethel Park and construction is expected to start in spring 2015. The 72,000 square foot facility will replace Bladerunners at 305 Church Rd. Once construction is complete, the South Hills YMCA property in Upper St. Clair will go up for sale and employees will move to the Bethel Park facility, which will be called Spencer Family YMCA. The $10 million facility will keep one of the ice rinks and try to keep the ice rink happenings as consistent as it has been in the past. There will also be an aquatics center with an indoor recreation pool and a six-lane pool, and possibly an outdoor pool. Rig Riggins, chief executive officer of the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh, said they are still examining the …

Mike Lloyd, an attorney, completes the last of his three-leg challenges to raise money for Camp AIM.
There are those that might think Mike Lloyd is a bit, well, crazy. And he is the first to admit they may be right. The Upper St. Clair resident just completed the third and final leg of his own “Visionquest” by completing a half-marathon. But it wasn’t just any half-marathon, it was 13 miles up Pike’s Peak Mountain in Colorado, a brutal, steep climb. “Races like these seem to attract a collection of characters who beat to their own drummer and all share that ‘lack of judgment gene,’” Lloyd said right after the race which he successfully completed on Saturday. The race was the last part of Lloyd’s three-part challenge to raise money for the South Hills YMCA Camp AIM. Lloyd, a volunteer at the YMCA, has pledges of more than over $2,000 for …

Upper St. Clair resident Mike Lloyd will take on the third and final leg of his “Visionquest” this weekend. If you have been following Lloyd, you know that the local attorney has embarked on a three-part challenge this summer to raise money for the South Hills YMCA Camp AIM. Lloyd is a volunteer at the YMCA and hopes to raise more than $2,000. Last month, Lloyd and his friend, Mark Coulson, biked 350 miles from Washington D.C. to Pittsburgh during the extreme heat wave. In June, Lloyd hiked the 34-miles-in-one-day hike when he completed the Rachel Carson Trail Challenge. This weekend, Lloyd and his daughter, Colleen, are going to take part in the half marathon at Pikes Peak in Colorado. The Pikes Peak Marathon is known for its steep and …

Camp AIM's 2011 session ends Friday, but the memories and relationships developed will live on forever.
Friday marks the end of another successful and inspirational summer at Camp AIM. Just like any other summer camp, participants had the opportunity to explore interests, learn skills and make friends. However, the campers at Camp AIM are special, and their participation is vital, according to Camp AIM board member Greg Englemeyer. "If it wasn't for this camp, there would be more than 100 kids home-bound in the summer," Englemeyer said. "It benefits the kids and families and provides a bridge between school years." Camp AIM helps children who live with various disabilities retain the information they learned during the school year and aids in their preparation for the upcoming school year. Campers range in age and ability. Many of the …

Mike Lloyd completes challenge to raise money for South Hills YMCA Camp AIM.
While many folks in the Pittsburgh area were enjoying a Pittsburgh Pirates game or relaxing in a pool over the past weekend, Upper St. Clair resident Mike Lloyd and his friend, Mark Coulson, were biking 350 miles from Washington D.C. to Pittsburgh. The trip followed the C&O Canal and Allegheny Passage. It was the second leg of Lloyd’s personal Visionquest—a three-part challenge he has made to himself all to raise money for the South Hills YMCA Camp Aim. He started his journey last month when he hiked the Rachel Carson Trails Challenge, a 35-miles-in-one-day hike. Lloyd hopes to raise more than $2,000. Despite the incredible heat, storms and reoccurring injury of Lloyd’s right leg, the two successfully completed their journey and pulled …

While most folks will be staying inside this weekend to escape the heat, Upper St. Clair resident Mike Lloyd will be outside biking 350 miles. Lloyd, 49, an attorney, will travel with his law partner, Mike Coulson, and his brother-in-law, Jerry Tucker. The three are completing the bike trip from Washington, D.C. to Pittsburgh as the second leg of Lloyd’s Visionquest. They kicked off their three-day journey this morning in D.C. at about 6 a.m. The trip will follow the C & O Canal and the Allegheny Passage. With temperatures expected to peak over 100 degrees in some areas, obviously, heat will be a factor. Lloyd started his Visionquest journey last month when he hiked the Rachel Carson Trails Challenge, a 35-miles-in-one-day hike. Lloyd is …

Upper St. Clair's Mike Lloyd was among 600 people who attempted a 34-mile-in-one-day hike.
The weather was almost perfect for a 34-in-one- day hike. Well, as perfect as it can be for such an undertaking. More than 600 hikers and runners attempted the Rachel Carson Trail Challenge, an event that takes hikers over trails, roads, creeks and ups-and-downs for almost 36 miles from North Park to Harrison Hills Park. Though billed as “34-in-one-day” it is closer to the 36-mile mark due to reroutes and trail changes. The weather was rather low humidity and in the 70s to 80s on Saturday, the day of the event. Another 200 hikers and runners took on the Homestead Challenge, a 17-mile event and another 70 the Friends and Family 8-mile challenge. Three Upper St. Clair residents were among the 600 taking on “The Challenge.” It was Mike Lloyd’…

I'm predicting that people will leave USC's Rec Center by the masses since the cost of membership is so high. I, for one, don't understand the high cost of membership. I heard they are thinking about putting in a pickleball court next to the pool. I sure hope not!!!   more ›
