Thursday night's showing of "Tapestries of Hope" at Dormont's Hollywood Theater was well attended as many came to meet the woman behind the story. Organized by Leonard Lies of Dream Catchers Films, the benefit raised funds for the Girl Child Network, a foundation created and nurtured by Betty Makoni, a woman of courage who is making a change in the lives of the children of Zimbabwe.

Betty Makoni, 2009 CNN Hero for the protection of the powerless, spoke to a select group of Upper St. Clair High School students Thursday morning. It was the only high school she spoke to during her trip to Pittsburgh. During two 45-minute assemblies organized by teacher Tanya Chothani, Makoni spoke to students about her own experiences with domestic violence and rape as a young child and how she overcame the obstacles to protect other young women throughout Africa. “It’s always good to come to a school to see students who are so eager to learn, who are bright and beautiful, and who have a vision,” she said when she stepped up to the podium following an introduction by USC senior, Alex LeClaire. Betty Makoni will be on hand to answer questions when an award-winning film about the continuing myth in Africa that raping a virgin will cure AIDS after the show at the Hollywood Theater on Thursday.
Betty Makoni, who is leading a global effort to stop the rape of women and girls in Africa, will be on hand this Thursday, Sept. 22, when the award-winning film, “Tapestries of Hope,” is shown at the Hollywood Theater, 1449 Potomac Ave., in Dormont. Dream Catchers Films Inc. is sponsoring the 74-minute documentary as a fundraiser for the Girl Child Network, which Makoni, who was named a 2009 CNN Hero, created to provide shelters for abused girls. Dream Catchers’ owner Leonard Lies, who is a filmmaker himself, said he was so moved by “Tapestries of Hope” that he decided to bring it to the Hollywood Theater to help the cause.
