Prom Dresses to Be Given Away

Allegheny County's 'Project Prom Shop' will again make available free prom dresses to eligible high school girls who find the cost of a prom outfit to be not within their budgets.

The Allegheny County Department of Human Services' Project Prom Shop will again make available free prom dresses to eligible high school girls who find the cost of a prom outfit to be not within their families' budgets. In addition, young men who are or whose families are currently receiving services through that county department are invited to participate in Project Prom 2013 for Gentlemen. The girls event will take place on the third floor of Century III Mall in West Mifflin from Monday, March 11, through Thursday, March 14, from 3 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, March 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The boys event takes place in the Human Services Building at One Smithfield Street in downtown Pittsburgh from 5 to 8 p.m. on every Thursday in …

LIHEAP Crisis Centers to Open Jan. 3

During the cold weather season, LIHEAP Crisis provides assistance to low-income households that are experiencing heating emergencies.

Pennsylvania's Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) will open its crisis program centers on Jan. 3, 2011, with a tentative closing date of March 30, 2012. The program may be extended or shortened depending upon the availability of federal funds. During the cold weather season, the LIHEAP Crisis program provides assistance to low-income households that are experiencing heating emergencies, including no heat, lack of deliverable fuels—heating oil, propane and kerosene—and heating system and fuel line repairs and replacements. In order to qualify for LIHEAP Crisis, an applicant must have an emergency situation caused by the utility service to the home being turned off and locked, being without fuel, or having broken heating …

Severe Weather Emergency Center Will be Available for the Homeless

Operation Safety Net thanks St. John Capistran Ladies of Charity, of Upper St. Clair, and others for making the shelter possible.

The Allegheny County Department of Human Services Office of Community Services and Pittsburgh Mercy Health System’s Operation Safety Net will again operate the Severe Weather Emergency Shelter for the safety of people who are street homeless. The shelter, located at the Smithfield United Church of Christ, 620 Smithfield Street, provides temporary, overnight accommodations, professional social services and protection from frigid temperatures to people who typically do not use other existing shelter resources during periods of severe weather. From Nov. 15 through March 15, 2012, the SWES will operate from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. when the temperature drops below 25 degrees Fahrenheit and when dangerous winter weather exists or is predicted by the …

Area Agency on Aging Hosts Public Hearing on Plan and Budget

Along with the hearing, a presentation on the agency's protective services, including identifying elder abuse, will take place.

The Advisory Council of the Allegheny County Department of Human Services Area Agency on Aging will hold a public hearing at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 14, in the Gold Room on the fourth floor of the County Courthouse, 436 Grant St., in downtown Pittsburgh. The purpose of the public hearing is to solicit comments on the 2011-12 area plan and budget prospectus. Persons wishing to give testimony may register in advance by calling 412-350-4083 for an assigned five-minute time slot. Speakers may also register the day of the hearing and provide testimony as time permits. A presentation will be provided about the agency's protective services.
