An eastern Pennsylvania state senator has introduced legislation to legalize marijuana and sell it alongside alcohol.
State Sen. Daylin Leach (D-Montgomery County) introduced legislation last week to legalize marijuana use in Pennsylvania for adults age 21 and older. Gov. Tom Corbett has already stated opposition to the proposal. Leach has also introduced a few medical marijuana bills in the Pennsylvania Senate, the latest of which in 2011 was co-sponsored by two state senators from Allegheny County, Jim Ferlo and Wayne Fontana. Leach’s latest proposal would provide for legal possession of up to an ounce of marijuana. He envisions that it could be sold alongside alcohol in state liquor stores and at beer distributors. Production, distribution and sale would be regulated in the same way as alcohol. He said the state should tax the sale, which at $1 per …

Want something a little more fancy than a tuna fish salad sandwich to take to lunch during Lent? How about shrimp instead?
With Lent upon us, I thought of all the people out there like me who can't stand a tuna fish salad sandwich but want to pack something seafoody for lunch. Then I immediately remembered a refreshing shrimp salad sandwich I had while beaching it up on vacation. That shrimp salad sandwich was delectable, so I took to the Internet to try to find a recipe that emulated the dish. There are all kinds of fancy recipes out there (Paula Deen's had eggs, for example), but in this case, I think the simpler the better. So here's a recipe I found on Cooks.com. Deliciousness! Here's what you need: 3 tbsp. seasoned soft cream cheese, garlic 1 1/2 tbsp. butter 1 tsp. lemon juice 1/8 to 1/4 tsp. dried dill weed (I'd go more toward the 1/4 tsp.) 2 tbsp. …

Gov. Tom Corbett's 2013-14 budget ties sale of state liquor system to a $1 billion grant for school safety, early education programs, individualized learning and science/math programs.
Gov. Tom Corbett's proposed 2013-14 budget, which he presented Feb. 5, contains an interesting cocktail that mixes the sale of the state's liquor system with funding of a public schools grant. Under his proposal, $1 billion obtained by the proposed privatization of the state's liquor sales would be used to create the Passport for Learning Block Grant that would focus on school safety; enhanced early education programs; individualized learning; and science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses and programs. The $1 billion in revenue to fund that grant will come from the three- to four-year process of selling the Liquor Control Board: $575 million from the wholesale license process, $224 million from the Wine and Spirits retail …

Here's an alternative 'salsa' recipe that doesn't leave me with big-time heartburn.
For the past few months, I've been following a low-acid diet to help curb some wicked heartburn issues—which means cutting out tomatoes and citrus fruits, greasy, high-fat foods, and anything with caffeine. That's tough. If you're dealing with those issues, too, you know it can be really hard to find great-tasting foods—especially snacks—that don't set off your symptoms. I've been altering recipes and experimenting with my own a lot lately so I can snack safely. Here's a "salsa" recipe I've been playing around with, and this mix is always changing. Feel free to replace what you don't like and let me know if you added something else that works! What I use (amount to taste): What you do: Chop up the larger items and mix the ingredients, then…

One of the most anticipated aspects of the Super Bowl each year are its commercials. 2013 was no different with popular brand names like Doritos, Best Buy, Wheat Thins and many more pulling out all the creative stops to make thier ads pop. Do we root against Ray Lewis, whose career with the Baltimore Ravens has angered Yinzers for 17 years, or do we root against the 49ers so they don’t match the Steelers with six Super Bowl titles?
Judgment Day has come for Yinzers across Steeler Nation in Super Bowl XLVII. Do we root against Ray Lewis, whose career with the Baltimore Ravens has angered Yinzers for 17 years, or do we root against the 49ers so they don’t match the Steelers with six Super Bowl titles? It’s a tough choice. Lewis, one of the greatest linebackers in NFL history, has a torrid history with the law after he was arrested on murder charges in 2000. Those charges were eventually dropped and Lewis pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice. But what might stick in the craw of every Pittsburgher is when Lewis mocked Joey Porter’s kick celebration in 2003. Porter, the former Steelers linebacker who was injured after being shot earlier in that year, thought Lewis was…

A tasty way to have crispy tenders without frying them.
I love chicken tenders, but I don't like to eat greasy food too often. I was happy when I found this recipe, and it's now one of my favorites! Ingredients: 2 cups of French fried onions 2 tbsp. all-purpose flour 1 pack of chicken tenderloins (season with salt beforehand) 1 egg, beaten What to do: 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. 2. Put the fried onions and flour in a plastic bag. Crush them until they are mixed well. Pour into a plate. 3. Dip tenderloins into egg and then coat with onion/flour mixture. 4. Place chicken on a baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes or until the center no longer is pink. Enjoy! Follow us on Twitter | Like us on Facebook

Not one cyber charter school in the state and fewer than one-third of 'brick-and-mortar' charter schools made Adequate Yearly Progress last year.
Charter schools have been touted as a way for students to escape underperforming local public schools ever since Pennsylvania passed legislation in 1997 establishing them as a independent public schools. Cyber charter schools followed in 2002. One of the key selling points used by charter schools has been that their students outperform their public school counterparts. But according to the Pennsylvania School Boards Association, historical data indicate that a consistently lower percentage of charter schools make AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) than traditional public schools. Last fall, the state Department of Education implemented a new way of determining whether charter schools have met student achievement milestones for AYP under the …

The Baldwin-Whitehall Patch editor dishes on his dinner creation.
I like to eat. So, one night, when my wife—yes, Mrs. B-W Patch—cooked up some whole wheat pasta with chicken, spinach and feta, I thought, "What else could we put in this?!" A quick raid of the pantry and freezer that night turned a good meal into a great one, and ever since, the Mrs. and I have added things to what is now known as, simply, "super pasta." OK, so I'm the only one who calls it that. Enjoy! Ingredients: Instructions: What else could I add to this thing? (Serious) ideas in the comments section please!
