Nonprofit Has Tons of Success Clearing Litter from State Waterways

Paddle Without Pollution, a nonprofit organization, cleans waterways throughout Pennsylvania and cleared 2.6 tons of litter from Chartiers Creek in April. Sponsored by Post Grape-Nuts.

About this sponsorship: In honor of the 60th anniversary of Sir Edmund Hillary's historic ascent of Mount Everest, Patch and Grape-Nuts are teaming up to highlight those who inspire people around them to climb their own mountains. This story was originally posted on the ChartiersValley Patch. Facing the Challenge Melissa Rohm and her husband, David, both avid kayakers, got tired of picking litter out of the waterways that they love. So, they founded the nonprofit organization Paddle Without Pollution to make a difference. Finding the Inspiration "In the summer of 2011, we launched our kayaks on the South Side downtown just for kicks and thought we'd paddle to Heinz Field and come back," Melissa said. "We didn't get very far when we started…

Upper St. Clair Run for Fun Attracts 250 Participants

Men and women, girls and boys, braved the hilly course on a beautiful, sunny morning.

The Upper St. Clair Community Day's Run for Fun on Saturday morning attracted 250 participants. The weather was sunny and there were smiles from all, even after running the challenging 3.1-mile course.  "It was hard, very hilly," said Sarah Martin, 14, who was the first female to cross the finish line at a time of 19:01. Martin is an eighth grader who does track, cross country and swimming. She came in second place last year. "I'm happy!" Martin exclaimed, after winning the race. For those who want to run in the race next year, she says to use hills to your advantage during training. Ryan Lott, 18, was the first place finisher of the race with a time of 18:34. Community Day a Star-Spangled Celebration

Not a drop of rain fell until 5 p.m.—the end of Upper St. Clair's Community Day.

The rain held off again for this year's "Star-Spangled Panther" Community Day. Red, white and blue T-shirts and balloons were sprinkled along McLaughlin Run Road as the community gathered Saturday for food and fun with neighbors. The Republican Committee's hot dogs and Women's Club's funnel cakes were a hit for all ages. And the bounce house by the library and the volunteer fire department's bounce house by the old rec center had a never-ending line of smiling youngsters. Flip through the photos and video above to get a taste of what the day was like and be sure to upload the photos and videos you took as well. Click here to see photos and videos from the parade.

The Upper St. Clair Community Day parade marched on without a hitch Saturday, May 18, 2013. KDKA's Keith James was the parade's announcer again this year. The parade will be shown on Upper St. Clair's public access television station. In the meantime, click through the photos and videos captured from the parade—and please …
