It's a 'Greyt' Day

There's a new dog in town—a four-year-old greyhound named Joey.

So, why is Joey so special? Because he is the 2,000th adoption conducted by Going Home Greyhounds, a retired racing greyhound rescue group based in Pittsburgh.

GHG has coordinated adoptions for numerous dogs in and .

Joey’s new home is with South Park residents Bill and Barb Emert, who have been involved with GHG for more than a decade. Joey is the fifth greyhound the Emerts have added to their family over the years. In addition to getting a new home, Joey also got an older greyhound brother named Dennis.

Joey moved in with his new family on Saturday and, much to the Emerts’ surprise, he brought along a large group of GHG volunteers to help celebrate the group’s milestone. Volunteers descended on the Emerts home with a big sign, balloons and a greyhound head-shaped cake from Pastries A-La-Carte.

GHG Foster Coordinator Elaine Pensenstadler said the group was anxiously awaiting reaching the 2,000 adoption mark, and everyone was thrilled when they found out it would be the Emerts. The challenge, she said, was keeping it a secret from the avid GHG volunteers.

About Going Home Greyhounds

Going Home Greyhounds is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization that began providing care and aid for retired racing greyhounds in 1995. While these lanky dogs love to run, once they retire they quickly turn into lovable family pets. Often called “45-MPH couch potatoes,’’ greyhounds are a very docile breed, content at curling up in a ball and sleeping away 18 hours of each day. Their calm nature also makes greyhounds ideal therapy animals. Learn more at www.goinghomegreyhounds.org.
