At 92, Upper St. Clair Man Is Trolley Museum's Oldest Volunteer

Meet Arthur Ellis.

One thousand hours of his time last year, the most of any volunteer at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum in Chartiers Township? No problem for Arthur Ellis, the 92-year-old Upper St. Clair Township man who still makes the roughly half-hour drive to the museum at least three times per week.

Ellis volunteers in the store of the museum, located at 1 Museum Rd., Washington, PA 15301.

The museum is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Its mission statement, according to its website, is "to communicate the story of Pennsylvania's Trolley Era to a diverse audience through the preservation, interpretation, and use of its collection of electric railway and railroad equipment, associated artifacts and photo/document archives, and to ensure that its visitors have an enjoyable and rewarding educational experience."

Trolley rides and birthday parties are available, as well as, of course, the chance to meet Ellis. And the museum will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a weekend of special events on June 22 and 23. Click here for more information, including ticket prices.

"It gives me something to do," Ellis said. "I've been interested in trolleys since I was 3 years old."

From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the museum is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
