Heat Wave Hits Upper St. Clair

How to beat the dangerous heat.

The hottest temperatures in nearly a year are moving into western Pennsylvania, according to KDKA.

The National Weather Service, located in Moon, issued a hazardous weather outlook for Tuesday and Wednesday.

"The combination of humidity and afternoon temperatures will lead to heat indices in the mid-to-upper 90s on Tuesday and Wednesday," according to the weather statement.

This is the type of heat that can kill, especially the elderly and those physically overdoing it at any age, according to AccuWeather

Be sure to look after your elderly neighbors. Do not leave kids or pets unattended in the car for any length of time.

It's smart to follow these tips from the NWS in this kind of heat:

1. Limit outdoor activities to the early mornings and evenings.
2. Drink plenty of water and decaffeinated beverages—even if you're not thirsty—and avoid alcohol.
3. Wear lightweight clothing and use sunscreen.
4. If you don't have air conditioning, go somewhere that does (a mall, a library), or go to the lowest level of your residence and stay there.

Allegheny County senior centers can also provide refuge for residents 60 and older. Six centers have extended hours on Tuesday, July 16:

Severe thunderstorms are possible for Friday and Saturday, according to the NWS. The primary threat will be damaging wind gusts.
