Center Hits 10K

Membership exceeds projections as the Community and Recreation Center at Boyce Mayview Park embarks on its fourth summer of operation.

Three years after it opened, the Community and Recreation Center at Boyce Mayview Park has reached a milestone.

The center topped the 10,000-member mark recently and of this week is closing in on 10,400.

And they’re not just coming from Upper St. Clair.

“Our fastest-growing population is nonresidents,” said Paul Besterman, township director of recreation and leisure services. The percentage of members who do not live in St. Clair is about 30 percent, up from 20 percent in 2011.

Overall membership has exceeded projections, which helps the center substantially from a revenue standpoint. The financial status is such that a membership fee increase was not necessary this year.

The center particularly has been crowded with the school year ending and the outdoor pool opening, along with a flurry of planned activities.

“In the summertime, there’s a large focus on the camps, anything from chess camps to sports camps to art camps,” said Sarah Povazan, membership/marketing services coordinator for the center.

On any given day, large numbers of members and guests can be seen taking advantage of the center’s amenities, including a massive gymnasium, group exercise rooms, a state-of-the-art fitness center and a 1/8-mile padded track around the perimeter.

Then there are the swimming pools.

The indoor section features a lap pool, whirlpool and a resistance channel, where a controlled current provides an opportunity for exercise or just for fun.

“It’s something really unique to our area, to be sure,” Povazan said.

Outside, it’s a veritable water park, with swimmer crowding in accordingly on hot summer days.
