USC Wrestlers Take Down The Colts of Char Valley

The USC Panthers wrestled their way to a 38-36 win over Chartiers Valley, despite injuries.

The Upper St. Clair wrestling team walked into a rather subdued Chartiers Valley gymnasium Wednesday night with a clear mission: Pin ‘em all. The Panthers needed to overcome automatic six point losses at the 119 pound weight class as well as the 215 pound weight class. The mission was clear and you could see the fight in their eyes. By my count, that is exactly what they got.  The Panthers scored five pins and one technical fall to take an insurmountable lead going into the last two weight classes of the evening, 130 and 135 pounds.

Sports are about gaining and keeping momentum and when you know that you are facing two losses and 12 points during a match, you are forced into a difficult situation to hold your focus. USC got up on Char Valley 21-6 through the 189 pound weight class when they ran into their first forfeit at the 215 pound weight class. After their forfeit it became 21-12 going into heavyweight. Unfortunately, Josh Houston got pinned to make the match score 21-18.

The lightweights were up next at 103 and 112 pounds. Upper St Clair’s Garrett Walnoha and Corey Wilding answered the call and both won their matches by tech fall and pin, respectively. That put USC back on top 32-18 when they ran into their second forfeit at 119 pounds making the match score 32-14. Luckily, at 125 pounds stood USC’s Mackenzie McGuire who dominated his match and pinned his opponent to earn six points and the dual match victory. With the match won for the Panthers, the Colts were able to pin John Erdman and Matt Bonetti at the 130 and 135 pound weight classes.

The Panthers showed resolve Wednesday night. Hopefully they will be able to get their roster filled this season because many of the matches that the Panthers won were impressive. There is a great deal of potential on their squad and I would love to see them move forward.
