Upper St. Clair’s McConnell-Serio Hired to Become Pitt’s New Basketball Coach

Upper St. Clair resident Suzie McConnell-Serio has been hired to be Pitt's new women's coach.

Upper St. Clair resident Suzie McConnell-Serio has been hired to be Pitt’s new women’s basketball coach.

McConnell-Serio had been coaching the Duquesne Duke basketball team before being hired by Pitt on Friday.

"I've been impressed with everything at the University of Pittsburgh and especially their commitment to the women's basketball program,” McConnell-Serio said. “Pitt is about its people and the enthusiasm that they have is really exciting and I'm proud to be a part of it.”

McConnell-Serio earned a 123-68 record while coaching at Duquesne for six years. She has a lengthy coaching career that includes stints in the professional Women’s National Basketball Association and Oakland Catholic High School.

"She has achieved tremendous success at all levels of basketball, both as a player and a coach,” Pitt Athletic Director Steve Pederson said. “Our program is on the cusp of a new era with new opportunities in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Suzie is the right person to lead us into that new era. We are all committed to her success and are very excited to begin working together."

McConnell-Serio grew up in Brookline and currently resides in Upper St. Clair. Her brother, Tim McConnell, currently coaches the Chartiers Valley boys’ basketball team.
