(Temporary) Lighting Approved at Boyce Mayview Park Athletics Fields

Miracle Field is included in the decision, but there are limitations.

The Upper St. Clair Township Board of Commissioners delayed a decision on Monday night on whether to approve permanent lighting at the athletics fields at Boyce Mayview Park.

However, the commissioners did approve the use of temporary lighting for some Boyce Mayview fields, including the multi-purpose field used for football, soccer and lacrosse, and the Miracle Field.

The commissioners' vote, acting on the recommendation of the township staff, was unanimous but only permits lighting during two months of the fall and two months of the spring, and only until 9 p.m. The Upper St. Clair Athletic Association is approved only for October and November, while the Miracle League of the South Hills is approved for September, October, May and June.

Those stipulations were written into the organizations' requests.

The approval by the commissioners—which expires in one year—does not imply that they will approve permanent lighting at Boyce Mayview.

The USC Citizens for Land Stewardship have said that they are against permanent lighting at Boyce Mayview Park due to light pollution and costs.

Township Manager Matthew R. Serakowski said that permanent lighting will be considered after the athletic association finishes collecting information regarding usage rates of the fields.
