Sean Casey Brings Top Baseball Camp to Upper St. Clair

Proceeds will go toward building a playground next to the Miracle Field.

Former Major League Baseball all-star Sean Casey, better known as "The Mayor," has used his connections to bring one of the country's top baseball camps to Upper St. Clair. "It's going to be great. It's something I've been wanting to do for years," Casey told Patch. Casey teamed up with his friends Billy and Cal Ripken to create Sean Casey's Champions Baseball Camp for the southwestern Pennsylvania area. Casey will be an instructor at the three-day camp along with four other men with impressive baseball resumes.  "They're some of the best coaches and players I've worked with in my 12 years of Major League Baseball," Casey said. Casey was particularly excited to work the camp with Bill Mosiello, current assistant head coach at the University of Tennessee. "He's one of the greatest coaches I ever had," Casey said. What makes this local camp so special is that proceeds will go toward a playground next to the Miracle Field that children of all abilities will be able to use.  "No one in this area has seen a playground like this. It's going to be a little over the top, but that's how we want it for our kids (the Miracle League players). It'll really finish off our vision," said Casey. "It's going to be so nice to have it in the township. It'll definitely have that wow factor." The playground is expected to cost about $500,000 to build and the camp proceeds are expected to push Casey's Clubhouse close to the fundraising goal. The camp will take place from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. for kids ages 9-12 and from 1 to 4 p.m. for kids ages 13-18 on June 18-20 at the Community and Recreation Center at Boyce Mayview Park. Casey is only accepting 100 kids in the 9-12 age group and 50 kids in the 13-18 age group to keep the instruction "top notch." Open spaces are first come, first serve. It's open to any player who wants to get better at baseball. "If I'm a kid in high school and I want to play college ball, or if I just want to get better, this is a no-brainer. It's a must-go kind of thing," Casey said. The cost is $449, but includes $200 worth of Rawlings, Under Armour and Marucci merchandise. A portion of the cost of the camp will be tax deductible, according to Casey. "I promise this camp will be one of the best your kids have ever attended," Casey said.  Click here to register for the camp. Casey and his wife, Mandi, created Casey's Clubhouse to raise enough money to form the Pirates Charities Miracle League of the South Hills. The league creates a way for children with special needs to enjoy the game of baseball.  The South Hills league began its second year on Saturday with more than 200 participants and has had the most successful start of any Miracle League in the nation.  Join Patch for more community news or join us on Facebook and Twitter.
