USC School District Joins Facebook and Twitter

District officials think using the social media websites will increase communication with the community.

District officials plan to use the social media websites to update parents, students and interested community members.

"I think we've come to the realization that social media is how people get their communication," Director of Technology Ray Berrott said.

Without any advertising, the Upper St. Clair Facebook page already has more than 200 "likes."

The technology department is currently in charge of updating the Facebook page and Twitter feed. They will post headlines, announcements and events—items that can also be found on the district's website. School delays and closings will also be posted on Facebook and Twitter come winter.

Some residents may ask why it took so long for the district to join Facebook and Twitter. Berrott said, "We were just being conservative."

However, the school district is now looking into mobile browsing as well. 

"It's predicted that mobile browsing will pass browsing on PCs in five years," Berrott said. 

Anybody to wants information about the Upper St. Clair School District should "like" the district on Facebook or follow the district on Twitter, including students.

"Most students already have Facebook pages, so students should definitely like us on Facebook," Berrott said.
