Mark You Calendar with School-Related Events

Seventeen days until students head back to Upper St. Clair classrooms.

Your favorite stores have only so much space. And this time of year, much of the space is filled with back-to-school buys.

Of course, the start of a new academic year means much more than shopping. A whole lot is happening, so now might be a good time to make sure your calendars are marked.

  • Aug. 13: Last time Upper St. Clair School Board met, the result was a new budget for 2012-13 that increased property taxes. Following a July with no meetings, the board regroups at 7 p.m. for a committee of the whole meeting. The board encourages USC residents to speak during public meetings (see PDF for guidelines).
  • Aug. 15-16: Orientation for new teachers.
  • Aug. 18: The high school football team plays its first scrimmage, traveling to Franklin Regional High School for a 10 a.m. start.
  • Aug. 22: Staff opening day. Teachers will have three in-service days before students report.
  • Aug. 23: Free family movie night! As something of a last hurrah for summer vacation, the film “The Lorax,” based on the Dr. Seuss book, will be shown starting at dusk in the Boyce Mayview Park multipurpose field. Admission is free. The event is presented by the Community Foundation of Upper St. Clair.
  • Aug. 27: Students report. And to make it a lengthy day for some educators, the school board’s regular meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m.
  • Aug. 31: The regular football season opens as the USC Panthers host the Woodland Hills Wolverines under the Friday night lights.
  • Sept. 3: School’s out for Labor Day, the real last hurrah for summer vacation.
