Crews Investigating Occasional Leaking in New Fort Couch Middle School Roof

A water line must also be replaced at Boyce Middle School.

The Upper St. Clair School Board received an update Monday night on the middle schools construction project.

Russell Del Re, general superintendent at P.J. Dick, Incorporated, told school directors that at times, there are leaks in the new Fort Couch Middle School roof in the gym and in a restroom near the library. He said crews flooded the roof to try to find the leaks, but that no water leaked at that time. Money is being withheld until the problem is fixed.

Another issue that has popped up is an apparent, small leak in the 40-year-old water line at Boyce Middle School. Because of the lower water pressure, it was unable to pass the fire marshal's test and the line must be replaced this summer for $34,000, according to John Bornyas, who is working with the district on a contracted basis to finish the middle schools project.

Other outstanding issues include repairs to the retention pond at Fort Couch due to a rough weather season, HVAC testing at Fort Couch and Boyce and the LEED certification process for Fort Couch and Boyce.

The middle school construction project began in September 2009.
