USC's Community and Recreation Center Wins Five State Awards

Five new honors for the C&RC at Boyce Mayview Park, including the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Green Parks Award.

Boyce Mayview Park was recently awarded the prestigious Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Green Parks Award. The honor recognizes excellence in the public park community for those that demonstrate the integration of green and sustainable park practices.

The Pennsylvania Recreation and Park Society also selected the C&RC for the following four awards:

  • Aquatics Excellence in Programming: Plunge with the Pumpkins
    A program that is offered at the annual in which the indoor leisure pool resistance channel is filled with pumpkins for children, and adults, to swim along with pumpkins as well as select one to decorate before leaving.
  • Maintenance Program or Technique: Facility Recycling and Green Earth Building
    In addition to extensive recycling, the green earth concepts cover everything from roof top air handling units, motion sensor light fixtures, participation in Clear Choice Energy Curtailment to bio-swale green space in the facility parking lots.
  • Specific Purpose Publication and Promotion: “4-in-4”
    New members at the C&RC are offered a special promotion in which they receive a $10 off coupon if each facility amenity is visited and/or utilized during the first four weeks of membership.
  • Unique Forms of Advertising and Promotion: Scratch-and-Win Ticket
    Each year the C&RC celebrates its members by presenting them with a trinket. The scratch-and-win tickets offered prizes such as free room rentals, personal training sessions, gift bags and more.

"It is a privilege to be presented with these awards. Our staff worked very hard throughout the year to offer top level services and programs and it is evident with our continued success," stated Paul Besterman, director of recreation leisure services department.

The awards were presented at the 65th annual PRPS State Conference held at Seven Springs Mountain Resort. The C&RC team members who accepted the awards were Besterman, Gary Schafer, Ryan McCleaster, Jeremy Lemley, Lynn Walcoff, Christopher Biswick, Melissa Lindberg and Sarah Povazan.
