USC Public Works Holds First Open House

Public Works employees teach local children about keeping the neighborhood safe.

Tuesday's rain put a small damper on the first annual Public Works Open House, but it sure didn't appear to bother the kids.

Groups of kindergarten students from learned to appreciate what the Upper St. Clair Public Works employees do every day.

"Oh my gosh this is amazing for the kids to be able to see what the community helpers do to help keep them safe," said Betsy Miller, a kindergarten teacher for Streams Elementary.

"Just seeing all the equipment and meeting the community helpers," said Lauren Kopitcko, a kindergarten teacher for Streams Elementary. "They are in awe over the machinery."

Township employees showed the students how they spread salt in the winter, how to sweep the street to keep it clean, how to cut branches from tall trees and how to load dirt.

"We're having a blast," Director of Public Works George Kostelich said.

The students also took a trip to the mechanical garage, where the mechanics raised a public works vehicle on a lift, changed a tire and demonstrated a brake inspection.

"I think the kids are enjoying it," said Walt Donaldson, head mechanic.

Tuesday's open house included a hands-on activity for the students. They created their very own hard hats.

"I think it's very productive to have the community get in and get to know about public works," said.

"It's our first year doing this. We hope it will grow in the future," Kostelich said.
