Sunny Election Day Attracts Huge Turnout, Some Confused About Voter ID

There was a big turnout at the Upper St. Clair polling places Tuesday, with no major problems reported.

The judge of elections at Westminster Presbyterian Church said she received some resistance from voters when she asked for their photo IDs for practice.

"There has been a lot of misinformation in the public about Voter ID requirements and voting. While voters may be asked to show a photo ID when they arrive at their polling location, it is by no means required in order to vote, unless you are a first time voter," said Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald.

Poll workers at Fort Couch Middle School said they barely had any time to ask voters for their IDs because of the huge turnout.

"It's been very busy," said Preston Shimer, judge of elections. "We had nonstop traffic from 7 to 9 a.m."

The morning crowd caused some parking issues at polling places, but voters said it was a good problem to have.

Lisa Klancher, a judge of elections at Baker Elementary, said by 1 o'clock, have of the ward's registered voters had voted. Her son, Jake, was volunteering at the polling place and joked he had a hand cramp.

Val Hornack, a majority inspector at Baker Elementary for more than 12 years, said she's never seen so many voters.

"Today's been wonderful. I have loved every minute of it," she exclaimed. "Come 5 o'clock, we're going to be swamped, 6 o'clock we won't know who we are. 7 o'clock we're going to be happy the day is coming to an end. 8 o'clock we're going to be crawling home and it's just wonderful!"

Poll workers at multiple locations reported seeing an influx of young and new voters.
