Steelers Fans Using the T Sunday Should Anticipate Crowds

Leave early to ride to the game; anticipate wait after the game.

Port Authority of Allegheny County recommends Steelers fans planning to use light rail service to attend Sunday’s game at Heinz Field allow plenty of travel time due to the high volume of riders anticipated throughout the day.

Even though Port Authority will provide a consistent flow of rail cars following the game, fans should expect a significant wait. Representatives ask anyone using transit service on Sunday to be patient.

Extra light rail service will be provided before and after Sunday’s game, which is scheduled to start at 4:25 p.m., and Port Authority will use two-car trains throughout the weekend to provide additional capacity.

In addition to the Red Line-South Hills Village and Blue Line-Library service offered on Sundays, Port Authority will provide “Subway Local” service, which stops at all stations on the North Shore, downtown, Station Square and South Hills Junction. The “Subway Local” trains provide extra service and convenient options for riders heading to and from Heinz Field:

  • Subway Local trains serve all stations on the North Shore, downtown and Station Square
  • Provide an excellent connection for anyone who parked in downtown or at Station Square.
  • Convenient for bus riders who transferred to light rail in downtown
  • Offer an opportunity for Blue Line and Red Line riders to leave Allegheny Station and wait in a downtown station for the next train heading to the South Hills. Conditions at Gateway, Steel Plaza, etc. will be less crowded and serve as convenient transfer points.

Here are a few more helpful tips for fans riding on Sunday:

  • Leave early: Fans who waited to ride the subway to the North Shore had a more difficult time finding space on a car.
  • Be patient and courteous: Light rail cars are expected to be filled before and after the game. Please be patient and considerate of others and the operator.
  • Allegheny Station: If you’re not familiar with the light rail service on the North Shore, Allegheny Station is closest to Heinz Field.
  • Post-game: Following the game, fans wishing to use light rail from Allegheny Station will be guided through a fenced line and allowed onto the station’s platform in groups (to ensure safety). Trains will serve the station on a regular basis until the game crowd has been cleared. Based on previous North Shore events and similar sporting events in other cities, this is anticipated to take some time. But, despite the wait, know that on the station platform, there are boarding and transporting groups of riders ahead of you as quickly—and safely—as possible.
  • Trains marked “Subway Local” provide service on the North Shore, downtown and Station Square. Specifically, they serve the following stations: Allegheny, North Side, Gateway, Wood Street, Steel Plaza, First Avenue, Station Square and South Hills Junction. Service between all “Subway Local” stations is free except for Station Square and South Hills Junction, which have a $2.50 one-way fare.
