Snow Causes Challenges for Public Works and Residents: Upload Photos Here

Monday's heavy snowfall causes school closings, stranded cars and messy roadways.

Monday night's snow storm dumped nearly eight inches of snow in the Upper St. Clair area, causing school closings, messy roadways and stranded drivers.

"There was no keeping up with the snow the way it was coming down," Director of George Kostelich said.

The snow started falling during Monday evening's rush hour. Every member of the snow removal crew worked to clear the roadways. They took a short break at midnight, and were back at it at 3 a.m. The crews just finished up clearing the roadways and township parking lots and sidewalks on Tuesday around 1:30 p.m.

The due to the snow. Kostelich said it was a good idea to cancel class because there was no way his crews could clear the parking lots and sidewalks in time, even with a two hour delay. The roadways are the public works' first priority.

There were no major accidents in Upper St. Clair during the snow storm. Kostelich said there were numerous reports of stranded vehicles, however those vehicles have now been moved.

Meteorologist John Darnley, of the National Weather Service in Moon, said to expect temperatures to stay in the low 30s Tuesday before they slide down to about 11 degrees overnight. Wednesday is expected to be cold -- in the 20s and 30s.

The mercury will rise Thursday and Friday, when the region will see milder temperatures into the 40s. But don’t get too excited, Darnley said: There is a 70 percent chance of rain Thursday into Friday.

Garbage collection will be delayed one day in Upper St. Clair, due to the inclement weather, according to the township's website.
