Congressional Candidate Announces 'Let Larry Vote' Petition Drive

Larry Maggi, Democratic candidate in the 18th District, said he may not be able to vote because of the state's new Voter ID law.

Washington County Commissioner , said he may not be able to vote this November because of

Maggi’s name was released by the Department of State as having a different name on his voter registration than he does on his driver’s license.

His voter registration is listed as “Larry Maggi” while his driver’s license reads “Lawrence Owen Maggi.”

To raise awareness of how unprepared the state is to implement this law less than 90 days from today, Maggi created www.letlarryvote.com to encourage others to sign his petition and demonstrate support for an injunction to delay the law’s implementation.

According to the new law, the name on the ID must “substantially conform” to the name on the voter registration.

Because the law does not define “substantially conform,” Maggi said the election judge at each polling location will decide if the ID meets that standard when a ballot is challenged.

In the event that Maggi’s ballot is challenged, he will have to fill out an affidavit, submit a provisional ballot, and produce proof of residency within five days.

"Even though the Department of State has verified that Maggi meets the qualifications to run for federal office, the same department may deny him his right to vote," his campaign office said in a statement.

“As a Marine, I served our country to protect freedom and democracy for every American. The most basic freedom in a democracy is the right to vote," Maggi said. "Now, I am not even certain my vote will count this November. The state is not ready to implement this law if over 700,000 people do not have the proper ID to be eligible to vote, including veterans and lifelong residents.”

Looks like a free political ad.
The state will offer Larry a free id card if he needs one. In this dreamed up scene, Larry is still voting by provisional ballot. Not turned away. The "700,000 voters without ids" is a number that cannot be substantiated, just a talking point.

If I registered to vote with my nickname rather than my LEGAL name, then it's my own fault that my vote won't count.

Give me a break. USCPatch is a left wing blog.

Not surprising it's a Democrat who can't get his name right. The Democrats have the most to lose from this law, since they have been the biggest abusers of the voting "privilege". They want dead people and felons to have a vote.

Is this guy desperate for any type of publicity? Yet another cheap attempt to get his name in front of the voting public.
Gee, if his name on his driver's license is different from that on his voter registration, who's fault is that?? Mine is the same on both, and it didn't seem to difficult to me, or logical to put " Bob" on any important document or form. Gimme a break!

Here is my questions. Now do forgive me for I am originally from WVa, but why does his driver and voter registration have 2 differnt names? How did he get this far in life! Sorry I don't feel sorry. You need Id for a job, cash checks and to get into a. Federal court house. A I'd card is only like $13 for 4 years. It's not that big of a pain!. It's a excuse so illegals, people not register or in eligible can vote with out question
william atwell August 10, 2012 at 08:25 pm
This is a very good reason not tO vote for democrats they can't keep there personal stuff in order and we want them in power! No wonder this country is messed up! Thanks Larry for messing up the country

Give me a break!! I agree Mr. Atwell. Reregister with the proper name and be done with it. You have until the beginning of October to contact the County Voter Registration to correct the issure.

@Jim Thomas, I am the author of this story and the editor of the Canon-McMillan Patch. I just wanted to personally extend to you an offer to write a signed letter to the editor to appear on my site expressing your views. You know, for the sake of balance that you've indicated you'd appreciate.

Mr. Maggi's inconsistency in his choice of names is no reason to delay implementation of the voter ID program.
I agree with the free publicity stunt. How low?

Get a command of the english language before giving your opinion in a public forum. An i'd card no a i'd card and an excuse not a excuse. WAKE UP BILL!

Larry needs to change his registration name to conform to his drivers license. No big deal. Just go do it.
william atwell August 11, 2012 at 01:27 pm
@ wake up I do have a command of the language. It's very hard to type it on a iPhone. And I am sorry but the whole story is one excuse after another. I don't understand how or why in this day and age being requested to show photo I'd to vote is a big deal. Oh and one more thing at wake up at least I dont use a alias
bob balmer August 11, 2012 at 04:14 pm
Now, You all know this voter id law was put in place to suppress the vote. You all can argue all you want but that is what this is all about.
Wake Up August 12, 2012 at 07:05 pm
*use AN alias.......not a alias. Once you graduate high school come back and give your opinion on this forum.
Kathleen Coleman August 14, 2012 at 05:16 am
I totally agree with Bob. Why don't they make the new voter ID law effective January 1, 2013.
Gary Paul August 15, 2012 at 07:41 pm
Bob - "suppress the vote"? Really? What significant block of voters do you imagine are suppressed? If you're referring to voters who can't engineer the acquisition of a free ID, do you think that they are people whom are qualified to vote? Maybe not.
bob balmer August 18, 2012 at 12:17 am
Gary Paul. Suppressing the vote has been a long time tactic used by both sides. If you believe that every one has the ability to jump in the car and drive somewhere to get an ID then I will not try to change your mind. Just answer this please. What makes you qualified to question some one else's qualifications.
