USC Firefighters Honored for Service

Fire Prevention Weeks begins in Upper St. Clair Sunday.

The Upper St. Clair Board of Commissioners recognized five Upper St. Clair volunteer firefighters last Monday for their years of service.

Chief Steven Moore has served the township for 30 years and Michael Thomas for 15 years.

Also honored, but unable to attend, were David Ickes with 20 years, Matthew Romah with 10 years, and Anthony Messina with 10 years. Messina is currently serving the country in Iraq.

Moore said it's difficult to keep volunteers for more than five years. He asked the public to give the volunteer firefighters a handshake and pat on the back when you see them around town.

"They work 365 days a year, seven days a week and 24 hours a day to get the job done," he said.

Commissioner Nick Seitanakis presented the certificates to the firefighters.

"The job you do saved our neighbor and we're extremely grateful," he said.

Seitanakis' neighbor's house on Morrow and Southampton Roads caught on fire years ago.

Commissioners also proclaimed Oct. 7-13 Fire Prevention Week in Upper St. Clair.
