Update: No One Hurt in Sarris Candies Fire

The fire was contained to the ice cream parlour, according to Sarris Candies' Facebook update.

About a dozen employees safely escaped a fire at early Friday morning.

Kevin Wittik, who works in the shipping department, said he arrived at the Canonsburg store around 6:30 a.m.—when smoke first started showing.

“I got in and got everyone out,” he said. “Smoke was just starting to be visible, but then it got pretty intense.”

Wittik and fellow employees gathered in the parking lot as fire crews worked to contain the fire, which appeared to start in the ice cream parlor-side of the building—mostly in the roof and attic.

The following was posted on the Sarris Candies Facebook page: "We have already started the cleanup process. The fire was contained to the ice cream parlour. We did suffer damage and will be out for a short period. Thankfully no one was injured and we are ready to get cleaned up and back to work."

And one concern was the upcoming Easter season.

“We’re gonna have a lot of catching up to do,” Wittik said.

Owner Bill Sarris, though, was optimistic.

“There is some cleaning to do,” he said. “We’ll hopefully be back in business as soon as possible.”

When?

He expected “days instead of weeks.”

Trucks are out, he said, and deliveries are being made.

“The Easter Bunny is safe,” Sarris said.

Sarris Candies tweeted, "Thank you for all your prayers and kinds words—we will keep you posted" just before 8 a.m. on Friday.
